Every Wednesday, the WHL streams a FREE game on their youtube channel. This week we have the Spokane Chiefs vs the Kelowna Rockets!! They play 3 hours from now. As always, I pick up a player/players to root for!!

BEHOLD: Andrew Cristall #82 for the Chiefs (WSH 40th overall in 2023).

If you were even peripherally following the WJC this year you may have seen people banging their pots and pans about his omission from team Canada.

THIS IS HIS DIVORCE MATCH!! He was recently traded from the Rockets.

And of COURSE people were mad he was left at home… he has 67 points in 30 games played (<- ahaha what the fuck) He’s on pace for 127 points as of writing and had a 7 point night just recently LOL!!

Ok now that I look at all this (Rockets were sellers at the trade deadline.. oh nyo…) we may be in for a bloodbath !! Um. anyways vibe check:

He’s one of those prolific Juniors Scorers who is also a Medium-Short King by NHL standards (5’9 in his draft year, currently 5’10) and just oozes skill…which of course means I keep stumbling across extremely divided takes on where he belonged in the draft rankings. Clips of interest: 1 / 2

I remember him being a VERY late camp cut and like can i just say we desperately need to work out a better solution than sending players like him back to Juniors to beat up children (manyyy such cases… eyeing Q.Musty)

I am delighted by this update article from after he got cut where they admit they know he’s doing this: “[Assistant GM Ross Mahoney] said he was impressed with how Cristall took the news, and how any residual anger he might have has been used to torment the opposition in the WHL.”

Honourable mention to Berkly Catton #27, Spokane’s captain. A very very fun player to watch. I’ve seen less than a handful of his matches. Dynamic, fun playmaking + he’s a beloved Kraken prospect so I’m ALWAYS rooting for his success. I imagine we’ll be hearing from both of them <3

Here we go again...

Kevin Sawyer, former NHL player and now TSN commentator just freely admitted to once saran wrapping then 15-year-old Jared Spurgeon (now playing for the Minnesota Wild) to a pole, six feet in the air. This happened when Kevin Sawyer was assistant coach of the Spokane Chiefs under Bill Peters.

We just had a lengthy discussion about toxic hockey culture, about abuse of players and this dumb fuck decides to tell this story because he thought it was funny. In case anybody wondered: no, we haven’t solved the problem. We have barely started.

Calgary, Alta. – The Western Hockey League, in association with the Canadian Hockey League and Hockey Canada, announced today that Spokane Chiefs captain Ty Smith will serve as captain for Team WHL at the 2019 CIBC Canada Russia Series.

In addition, the WHL announced that Vancouver Giants defenceman Bowen Byram, Lethbridge Hurricanes forward Dylan Cozens, and Kelowna Rockets forward Nolan Foote will serve as alternate captains for Team WHL. All four players represented Team WHL at the 2018 CIBC Canada Russia Series.

The 19-year-old Smith has served as captain of the Chiefs since the start of the 2018-19 WHL Regular Season and was chosen in the first round, 17th overall, by the New Jersey Devils at the 2018 NHL Draft. The first-overall selection from the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft was named the WHL and CHL Defenceman of the Year in 2019 and the WHL Scholastic Player of the Year in 2018. 

Byram, the fourth-overall selection of the Colorado Avalanche from the 2019 NHL Draft, will serve as an alternate captain for the event. The 18-year-old defenceman has 12 points (2G-10A) in 14 games this season and 110 points (34G-76A) in 152 WHL regular season games.

Cozens, the seventh-overall selection of the Buffalo Sabres at the 2019 NHL Draft, has 17 points (10G-7A) in 13 games this season to lead the Hurricanes in scoring. He has recorded 155 points (67G-88A) in 141 WHL regular season games. 

Foote, the 27th-overall selection of the Tampa Bay Lightning at the 2019 NHL Draft, will serve as an alternate captain as well. Earlier this month, the 18-year-old Foote was named the 25th captain in Rockets franchise history and leads the team in scoring with 16 points (7G-9A) through 11 games this season.
