Today I got to see the results of my first ever attempt to wet set my hair overnight in sponge rollers. I’ve never tried this before (I usually use heated rollers each morning to give my hair some volume and shape), but I am attending an event next weekend where they have asked for me to arrive with my hair set in “whatever style I am comfortable with” - and I don’t think my usual wavy mess from heated rollers will suffice!
I followed the instructions on Miss Victory Violet’s blog (www.missvictoryviolet.com), and bought some Tigi “small talk” cream to use as a setting lotion (I bought it from here: www.justmylook.co.uk). I bought some cheap sponge rollers from the pound shop, and some slightly more expensive (£2) smaller rollers from Boots (www.boots.com). I also picked up some stronger hairspray (Davines More Inside Strong Spray, from here: www.luxuriouslook.co.uk), and a misting bottle to keep my hair damp while I was putting it in the rollers. Last weekend I bought myself a better brushing out hairbrush, and some clips to help me style my hair after I have set it - so I hoped I had everything I would need!
The pound shop rollers had predictably terrible quality plastic clips to hold them in place, so I used the Boots rollers, which were smaller (I think maybe too small…), but had much sturdier clips and were much easier to work with.
Despite feeling like I was doing a great job rolling my hair into the rollers, the result was a bit of a mess. I should have used more rollers (I think), and spaced them better across my head. The clips also left dents in the curls on the top of my head, which I will try to avoid next time.
Turns out I didn’t have everything recommended, as I didn’t have any sea salt spray, which people seem to recommend for putting on your roots before you roll your hair into the rollers - to help with volume and keeping your backcombing in place. I used some hairspray instead before I attempted to backcomb it - which I am not sure really worked. I’m not great at backcombing at the best of times, and my hair this morning does look decidedly flat!
Wrapping my head in this giant scarf was very comfortable to sleep in, and I was surprised to find my hair had dried completely by the time I woke up this morning. However, it was super curly, and I think I should have used larger rollers, as I wasn’t happy with the result at all.
Let’s hope I can get a better result with a bit of practice before next Sunday! Eeep!
