The surface of water is a deeply dynamic structure that can readily and spontaneously organize itself into structures of remarkable regularity and order - the classic concinnous comber being but one overt, obvious example - as witness the parallel arrays of undulating striations, pleats as it were, marking the surface of this flowing stream.

We tend to think of self-organization as a trait exhibited only by animate forms, by living forms, but inanimate nature too can deeply organize itself on macroscopic scales  - as witness tornadoes, cyclones, and here, the perfect pleats - and indeed IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN PRECISELY THIS TRAIT, FIRST FOUND IN INANIMATE MATTER, THAT ALLOWED LIVING SYSTEMS TO COME INTO EXISTENCE AT ALL; INANIMATE MATTER, BY SPONTANEOUSLY ORGANIZING ITSELF, IN A SENSE PAVING AND PREPARING THE WAY FOR THE HIGHER ORDERS OF LIFE TO COME INTO EXISTENCE.
