Found myself thinking about how I have a lot of judgements towards the behavior and though processes of older people and people in the past that, while I do think they are legitimate, are also rooted in this massive cultural difference where what was once seen as the unthinkable has now become the inevitable, and it is now understood that the distinction between doing something ironically and doing something genuinely no longer meaningfully exists and maybe never did. The past is another planet. I got thinking about this regarding being a fan of the work of Jhonen Vazquez but horrified by his past association with Jimmy Urine and wondering ‘how could he not know, with all the bigotry and pedophilic shit in MSI’s work, how could he have not?’ And I don’t know if he knew or not, I don’t know what he might have seen or might have been told, but I guess something that is now unimaginable is that he genuinely thought all that stuff was a joke. And I don’t think that justifies anything but. Man. It also makes me think of how I’ve seen older people laugh off the idea that people in the alt-right are genuinely neonazis and fascists, insisting that it must just be a joke or something, and meanwhile I’ve come of age in a world where it’s like ‘yeah, there’s neonazis, they’re everywhere, we’ve all seen them.’ And that thing where older people will act as though younger people take everything too seriously and are so sensitive and unable to take a joke because some things are “just a joke” and I think a cultural shift that has occurred is that an increasingly large number of people, accurately I think, recognize that there just really isn’t a distinction between the “joke” and reality. Everything is ironic and everything is a joke and everything is real and deadly serious and those just aren’t contradictory

I do wanna add that of course another major cultural shift is that many people in the past just didn’t consider pedophilia to be as bad as we do now, that the MeToo movement made necessary strides towards confronting rape culture and pedophile culture, that our current wave of right wing bullshit has been motivated in large part by popular backlash to feminism and the MeToo movement, and of course that feminism was and is one of the greatest things to happen to society and we must not stop until its crushing fist has fully destroyed all remnants of our current world and the rape culture that continues to exist within it.
