To sayshe was stubborn was an understatement, but luckily, he was bullheaded, too.
“Justone night,” Nyx pleaded, and he nearly bounced in his boots as he gripped herhand, eyes big and shining a beautiful shade of blue in the orange and yellowsunset of Tenebrae. The smile on his face was composed of pure excitement,something that Lunafreya admittedly hadn’t seen in quite some time, at least,not to this extent. Still, there were things that needed to be done and dutiesto uphold.
“I amsorry, but I cannot comply with your wishes at this time,” she informed himwith a particular tone of voice that lacked emotion, as though it was anotherautomated response pulled from her arsenal when having to deal with other royalfigureheads. Still, Nyx persisted. He rolled his eyes and stepped in front ofher fully, blocking her from heading to her destination across the grounds tomeet with Ravus.
“Don’tbe like that,” he whined, throwing in a small pout that he hoped would breakher. To his credit, it almost worked, but Lunafreya stood her ground andhuffed. “A night out with me isn’t going to hurt anyone. Besides,” he leanedclose, the tip of his nose touching hers, and Lunafreya fought the urge toclose the space between them and kiss her gorgeous bodyguard until he couldn’tthink straight. “Aren’t you the one who said that there was no safer place foryou to be than with me?”
Lunafreyabristled at that and scoffed, trying and failing to advert her gaze to anywherebut his own as she blushed a brilliant shade of red that complimented thesunset.
“Thatwas…what I mean to say is…” She flustered and attempted to tug her hand fromboth of his, but to no avail (although if she were being honest, she hadn’treally tried at all). It was only made worse by the triumphant chuckle fromNyx, and she scowled, narrowing her eyes.
“Are youalways so articulate, Princess?” he teased, and Lunafreya’s face only grewhotter as she puffed out her cheeks in a most indignant fashion.
“Don’tpatronize me, Glaive,” she warned, but it fell on deaf ears as Nyx continuedhis plight.
“Onenight, Lunafreya. That’s all I’m asking for. It’s been far too long since I’vehad the pleasure of treating you to a proper evening.”
Lunafreyasighed. He wasn’t wrong; quite some time had passed since their last outingtogether, and she silently admitted that the need for some quality time withhim was quickly becoming a need rather than a want. Even with that knowledgeand acceptance, however, she held steadfast.
“Nyx,please. Not now,” she insisted, and she took the opportunity of his handsloosening from around hers to slip around him. Of course, she felt guiltyleaving him there dejected, but there were other, more important matters toattend to. Not to mention she was certain she was late for her meeting with herbrother.
Withinseconds, however, Nyx had a hold of her hand again, and irritation had settledin her bones as she whirled on him.
“You donot know when to give up, do you?” the princess snapped, but Nyx wasn’t fazed.If anything, it only seemed to fuel him more.
“Onenight,” he bargained again, “and I’m insulted that you think I would give up onsomething so important.”
Lunafreyatook a long, deep breath, and closed her eyes. Her fingers wound with his, andshe allowed Nyx to press their foreheads together as she collected herthoughts. After a few silent moments, despite the nagging in the back of hermind that she shouldn’t keep Ravus waiting, she nodded with finality.
“Onenight,” she agreed. “Be ready at sunset tomorrow evening.” The slow grin thatspread acorss Nyx’s features brought a sincere smile to her own, and he kissedthe bridge of his nose playfully. “Now go on, before my brother finds somethingnew to get you in trouble for, Sir Ulric.” With a quick squeeze of his hands,she left him again, and she pretended not to see him fist pump the air as hewalked in the opposite direction out of the corner of her eye.
