spookylapin hope u like this nerd
Alias: N/A (some locals call him Mech but he isn’t sure if he likes it)
Power: Technomancy/Technology Manipulation – While Abel isn’t capable of producing anything out of thin air, his manipulation of existing technology is quite extensive. He can use/interface with virtually any machine (including shutting them down or powering them up) and cause entire systems to crash. Additionally, Abel can generate technological constructs such as weapons and armor, so long as he is nearby the necessary resources.
Appearance: Ask someone to describe Abel, and the first words out of their mouth would probably be “all skin and bones.” Combine that with a height of 5’8’’, and it’s not hard to understand why so many of his neighbors have likened him to a pole. His hair is black and unruly, just shaggy enough to brush the tips of his ears, and his face has soft features. Due to being Hispanic, his skin is a dark tan color. There always tends to be a dreamy look in Abel’s gray eyes, as if he’s not quite fully there. This has often led to others viewing him as an easy target, a mistake that never took long to realize. While he may not be gifted in strength, Abel is certainly quite capable of moving quickly. His mother always stressed the importance of good posture, so he’s sure not to let himself slouch, even if it looks uncomfortable sometimes. As for clothes, he tends to like dark shirts with bright splashes of color, occasionally pairing them with a red and white flannel shirt he’s had since he was twenty. He owns maybe three pairs of ripped jeans, and one pair of black tennis shoes that he keeps meaning to replace. If he’s doing “hero work,” he wears a dark gray jacket with the hood up and a bandana over his face.
Personality: Ever since he was little, before his powers emerged, Abel has been the type of person to keep to himself. Although he’s generally friendly towards strangers (if a bit cautious), it can take quite some time for him to truly open up. When he’s around friends, he’s quick to laugh at a joke or give his undivided attention to someone telling a story. He has very strong beliefs about the way the world should be, and won’t hesitate to defend them. If someone needs help, Abel is often one of the first to offer his time. However, this can sometimes go a bit too far—Abel can have trouble with saying no, even if he knows for a fact that he’s already under too many obligations. This can lead to him becoming stressed out and snapping at people, which of course makes him feel even worse. Under stress, he is also very easily overwhelmed, which has led to some accidents involving his powers. Abel tries to avoid conflict as well, preferring to just “agree to disagree” provided the topic of debate isn’t something he’s passionate about.
History: Although he didn’t grow up in poverty, Abel is familiar with the feeling of hardship. With two younger sisters, Gema and Lidia, and an older brother, Igon, it was never easy scraping enough money together to put food on the table. However, somehow the family managed, always abiding by a firm schedule: Abel’s parents went to work in the morning, while he and his siblings went to school. Afterwards, Igon would head to his part-time job while Abel was responsible for meeting his sisters and walking them home. They would do their homework, and then Abel would prepare dinner. It was by no means an ideal life, but they got by.
Except then Abel’s father died. And the superpowers thing happened.
Abel was fifteen at the time, getting through high school with mostly B’s and the occasional C in subjects like government or English. He’d always had a knack for figuring out devices, taking things apart and putting them back together in a matter of seconds when he was bored. Most people just thought it was a natural talent, Abel included. It wasn’t until technology started acting strangely around him that he began to become concerned. Television sets began to show static if he got too close, and computers threatened to crash. Still, Abel tried to write it off as a coincidence.
This became a bit more difficult when he found out his father had been killed in a car accident and half the neighborhood subsequently lost power. The loss caused Abel to retreat into himself for a while, resulting in even more practice with his new abilities, locked alone in his room. Life became much more difficult for the Lucera family after that—Abel’s mother was forced to work longer shifts, and there were several arguments about whether or not Igon should leave high school to work full time, despite the fact that he would be starting his senior year that fall. Given how stressed out everyone already appeared to be, Abel decided not to mention the discovery of his powers. Instead, he practiced them in secret, testing his limitations. Sometimes he would offer to fix things for other kids at school, charging a small fee if the problem was especially complex. It didn’t bring much money in, of course, but every cent helped (not to mention fixing a cracked iPhone screen was a quick way to get someone to like you).
Just as Abel’s sisters were entering high school, he was graduating. By that time, both his mother and Igon worked full time to keep the family afloat, and it was expected that Abel would do the same. Any thoughts of going on to college to become an engineer were just daydreams. Abel began work fixing computers for a while, but slowly the monotony began to drive him crazy. All around he saw people getting killed, stolen from, driven out of their homes for fear of their lives. And here he had this ability that might be able to help. So, at 19 years old, Abel donned a simple gray jacket with a black bandana and began doing vigilante work.
Of course, it’s difficult to balance being a hero with working to support his family, so even after three years, Abel is far from an expert. Still, crime in the area has definitely decreased, and there are whispers about the man in the gray hood who patrols the streets at night. Abel only wishes he could help people on a larger scale.
