People in class today talked about the “fact” that when we reach our physical limit we’ve actually only used 40% of our body’s capacity. And not only does that fuel the dangerous constant grind working mentality America loves so much but it completely leaves chronically ill people behind. I believe there is some validity to that fact because I often push myself past my physical limits not because of some workers fetish but because if I admit where my physical limit actually is I’ll be seen as lazy and entitled or faking it to avoid work. Trust me that limit is there for a reason. I have both worked my body to the bone and worked passed the number of spoons I had. I can see the appeal in powering through and being in awe at what your body is capable of but I also know what my body is capable of in the worst possible way. Our society’s need to cause actual damage to our bodies to prove we’re working harder than anyone else to prove we deserve any amount of success is so damaging.
