Your Bluestar vs. Asterfall inspired me to do a quick sketch.
Everyone please excuse the very bad anatomy XD I mostly draw closed mouth cats for a reason
Is there any specific meaning behind the suffix -mane? :O “Eelmane” sounds like a Medusa-esque character and it sounds SO cool
Yes! I was actually working on that.
"Mane" is a taboo avoidance name. Essentially, some cats believe it to be arrogant and self important to use the "honorable" affixes representing their demigods and divinities. So Lion, Leopard, Tiger and to some cats, Lynx, Moth, Sun, Moon etc.
So they take up avoidance names that exist specifically to reference the name they want but in a more humble way.
Some clever cats use it to thematically name their entire litters or to avoid confusion.
A few other examples of avoidance names are:
Twine/Braid - referencing the braided stripes of a tiger
Musu - old clan word for moon
Nimi - old clan word for little
Edit to add: Eelmane as a name means, "clever and brave/honorable"
