speaking of misunderstood supernatural creatures... an excerpt of an excerpt from my novel in progress
"I guess the first thing to do is explain to you how to spot a vampire, because in our world today full of spray tans and 'tortured youth' who look like they've just crawled out of the deepest caverns of the Misty Mountains, you can't just point at the nearest pale person, declare them a vampire, and consider it a job well done.
"I mean, if you went by skin tone alone, I'm the prince of the underworld, rather than simply terminally Irish. So how do you spot a vampire? The no reflection trick is good, but it doesn't immediately rule out a few other supernatural denizens either; ghuls and the glamour of a fae, for example. The best way to spot a vampire, then, is to stumble across one out drinking with his or her friends.
"Vampires love to drink. In fact, you're almost never going to run into a vampire under the age of twenty-five (allegedly), not only because informed consent is big in the vampire community and biting an underaged participant would require parental consent as well, but because being too young to buy your own alcohol for all of eternity is tantamount to cruel and unusual punishment to a vampire.
"... vampires are kind of drama queens, just FYI. But they really do know how to party, which comes in handy when you're wandering lost around the really grotty part of Sacramento looking for a grocery store, let me tell you."
