People arrive in dribs and drabs.

Trips to Spruce Lawn start and end with a lot, a lot of vodka. Because what else. Half way through the trip my kidneys always start aching, I’m not a big drinker usually. But the crew know how to throw down so you have to keep up.

The kids play and play and play all day, right up until their eyes close at night. I remember being in that house as a child and my memories are all laced with magic. The land feels endless and the house feels gigantic when you are only 3 and a half feet tall.

The evenings are the best time ( although early morning when no one else is awake feels pretty special. I put my Dad’s boots on and drink tea in the kitchen) Anyway, the evening, the heat dies of slightly and everyone comes back from their various jobs to share a meal and some proper time together. We have no TV, phone or internet there which makes the time you spend together very different because everyone is really there.  

We decided to unwrap the fairground carousel. The men dove in to the challenge with child like enthusiasm, maybe..could we make it spin again? We were all waiting, lingering...not wanting to put tooooo much in to it juuust incase. The moment it jolted to life was epic, we cheered and whooped and clapped. After it was checked for safety the children clambered on excitedly and around they went, round and around they went. After more cheering and whooping, silence rippled over all of us. How beautiful. He did it again, there we all were.
