Seeking Familiarity Having spent the better portion of my life in new Jersey, there are many animals with which I am completely unfamiliar. Grouse, and in particular, spruce grouse are nonexistent here, even in the extreme wild areas. There are some small pockets of ruffed grouse in Northern New Jersey but spruce grouse are an absent species here and extremely rare along most of the northeastern United States. It was my great luck to have come across this female spruce grouse while hiking at Chugach State Park. This human-tolerant species gave me ample opportunity to become more familiar with her as she searched the ground for insects and seeds. #SpruceGrouse Have a wonderful Sunday! Catching Up 6U8A5774 by Daniel D'Auria Via Flickr: It’s almost two months since I returned from Denali National Park and the season out east is just catching up. Despite the changes, I am still grappling with the range of colors I experienced in the Alaskan tundra. Of course, running into the occasional northern inhabitants is always a thrill. This spruce grouse was more than happy to put on a little display along the road.
Spruce Grouse, Canada Grouse, Fool's Hen, Spotted Grouse, Black Partridge, or Spruce Hen 𝘍𝘢𝘭𝘤𝘪𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘯𝘪𝘴 𝘤𝘢𝘯𝘢𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘴 or 𝘊𝘢𝘯𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘴 𝘤𝘢𝘯𝘢𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘴 I'm not sure why all of the names, especially if not all of them are hens, hmm?! Anyway, this one flew in front of me and landed in a spruce tree. Not sure how it is holding on. Apparently, they eat spruce needles. This one, I think, is a male, though there does not seem to be a bright red patch over it's eye. Perhaps it is a young one, or the light was too low. The females are typically more muted, and the young all tend to resemble the females for camouflage. Once again it is difficult to research because most of the photos online are in the extreme or near-perfect examples. I found one site, birdweb.org, that has a similar picture, and states it is a male. #sonydschx400v #sonydsc #sonycybershot #SonyCameras #sprucegrouse #falcipenniscanadensis #malefoolshen #malesprucegrouse #malesprucehen #birdweb #kenai #kenaipeninsulabirds #alaska #alaskaphotography #alaskawildlife #alaskawildlifephotography #alaskabirds #canachitescanadensis (at Kenai, Alaska) https://www.instagram.com/p/CV4hNasrNrH/?utm_medium=tumblr
Late for a Date It was late in August in Lake Clark National Park and a bit late for a spruce grouse to be courting one of his ladies. That didn’t stop this handsome fellow from doing just that. Nor did he seem at all intimidated by my presence a few meters away. The unexpected encounter had me taking a break from all the bear activity of the day and crawling on all fours to get as close to the two as I could. They eventually moved off the trail and deeper into the woods where we lost sight of them. #sprucegrouse (at Lake Clark National Park & Preserve) https://www.instagram.com/p/CG893d0gra-/?igshid=w9wo93cankgv
