Formaggio anon again. When you say Formaggio's arc was butchered by DP…I get what you mean, but respectfully, I disagree. I do know that the framing of that scene in the anime vs the manga does seem different. Manga Formaggio seems angry and justs wants to hurry up and get the information out of Narancia, while anime Formaggio starts going a bit "crazy" while talking to him, but they both say the same lines. In the past, I have seen someone make the claim that anime Formaggio comes off as someone who's only in it for the money, I just don't see it. Maybe this is just my personal preference, but I actually like it when Formaggio's a bit unhinged. This is Jojo after all, everyone is like that in one way or another. I also don't think he's always like that, he can absolutely be cold and professional when he needs to (after all, he's pretty two-faced). I just think him being unhinged when he's Really Fucking Pissed Off is interesting to me. But…perhaps it's not very accurate to his facial expressions in the manga, so that's why people are split on it. And I get that. I dunno, I just like all versions of him!!
Welcome back! I see where you are coming from, and I agree that all versions of Formaggio have something to offer, so the more we have of him, the better maybe?
But just to be safe, when I said that his anime character arc was butchered, I didn't just mean about his being characterized as more unhinged, which honestly seems fine if you have only watched the anime and have no reference to the manga, or the anime's choice of handling that part appeals to you more. I watched the anime first for all parts of JJBA so far (and have not read much of the manga beyond getting some way into Vento Aureo), so I would have accepted this at face value had I not been privy to a die-hard Formaggio fan lamenting all the changes that occurred. I did think at the time that his color palette was terrible in comparison to most of the characters, and when I saw how that bottle scene went originally, I felt a stronger dislike to how DP handled Formaggio.
However, what I really took issue with at the end was something that I actually made a passionate twitter thread about, which I will link here in case you want to read the whole. I will quote the part I'm referring to, the biggest issue I had with the anime adaptation:
i present to you: formaggio acknowleding narancia, and telling him he will tell his team how hard he fought when he finds them (and kills them). present in both translations, which means it definitely reflects the original's intent! and it's left completely out of the anime!
this is huge, for two reasons. one, formaggio comfortably expresses this respect. in the course of fighting, he and narancia had become equals. and formaggio also knows how important groups are. he takes pride in his own! so he knows they are important to narancia! (...) do you know who does this same thing? who stops mid-fight to openly acknowledge his opponent's skill and show respect, and who is allowed to have this moment in the anime? prosciutto. (...) and so it is a shame that the anime left out a moment that shows formaggio is capable of being just as genuine. he shows the same respect prosciutto does, and it is not even framed as an apology like prosciutto's acknowledgement is! it is a gesture offered freely!
THIS is my biggest beef with anime Formaggio - that he was denied this. I don't touch upon it in the thread I think, though I only skimmed it, but even Illuso is allowed a moment where he tells Abbacchio that he's got a good teammate in Giorno. Even Illuso can have a moment where we see that he can appreciate camaraderie and support when he sees it, and he is gracious enough to remark on it! Why DP denied Formaggio his gesture is therefore beyond me, and that is why I believe that for some reason the production team just didn't like him.
Anyway, I recommend the thread I linked because I really do go into more detail about everything and gush about Formaggio!
thoughts on the squadra and their preferred type of pet and whether or not they have any? :0cc
I searched back and found a post on ideal pets, and another post on favorite animals, so I'm linking those! Looking over these choices, I would say that in canon, only Illuso would be able to make do (you'll see what I mean), while everyone else would have to content themselves with stray cats and Baby Face laptop, ehe.
Does the squad celebrate birthdays?
First, I feel the need to link my very first La Squadra one-shot, because it might just be relevant...!
And now onto the main event: to my mind, a group this isolated and only having each other would definitely celebrate birthdays just to feel more human and bring some joy into their otherwise gritty lives. Not that they can do this in a normal fashion, their choices are limited by the lack of family and friends to invite and the resources they can spend, but for each and every one of them, there would have been some cake (Risotto baked several, including some gluten free and dairy free cakes for Melone), and one candle, because one is enough to capture the symbolism of it all and that leaves more money for the cake, as Sorbet and Illuso have argued very often. They all know how to sing “Tanti Auguri a Te”, though some tend to just shout it or mumble it, and then they have dinner together.
What happens after is up to the birthday boy in question - most of them are perfectly content with breaking out the booze and cards on the patio complete with the usual Formaggio brand party games, even Melone, but there have been special requests over the years. They sometimes went to the gay bar down the street to party, or sought out a sports bar and had a brawl there; Ghiaccio isn't into any of it so they took the party to a park and even skated on the open water thanks to White Album; one year there was no official dinner just so they could treat Prosciutto to a meal at a five star restaurant (they ate leftovers at home until he returned and then they got out the booze and cards on the patio); Illuso once asked for everyone to basically come up with an act and entertain him after dinner, so Risotto juggled knives...
I just want them to have these little moments of awkward domestic felicity where they are singing happy birthday like their lives depend on it and how everything after is not much different from what they usually do, but it's something, you know?
i have a brainworm and would like to share with the class & get some input and such ,,
ghiaccio but he’s actually calm/happy/acts like a regular fucking person around people he trusts deeply. Like. Would unironically die for them. this is a hard status to obtain, and i’m wondering who on the team you think would acquire the Trust™️ of the blue creature?
not a question, just an add on thought,,, personally, i think ghiaccio likes the idea of being affectionate with those he trusts, but he’s just been dealt a bad hand too many times for there to really be many people he trusts around him ,,, does this make sense maybe i’m just rambling about the weird blue guy now lol
Thank you for sharing with the class, Anon! :D
I always like the idea of characters in relatively bad situations having some conditions under which they can feel normal or comfortable, and this tickled me because I love Ghiaccio both as a screaming gremlin and as someone who deserves to be less of it, hehe.
Right off the bat, my thought was that a person who might be granted the Trust™️ of the blue creature should be at least two things: 1) someone Ghiaccio can respect in some way, and 2) straightforward. I mean respect as in they either have some qualities that Ghiaccio admires or they have earned his respect, and straightforward as in somebody who will square with him and communicate what they mean and want so that there's no confusion. I headcanon Ghiaccio as autistic and feel he would appreciate someone who doesn't send mixed signals. Here the best contenders are Prosciutto, Melone, and probably Risotto, though his position as leader might hinder the development.
But I would like to allow for some leeway as well, so another type of person who could earn the Trust™️ is someone who is very clearly actively striving for it. I would put Formaggio and maybe Pesci here because they would have to make more effort to truly earn respect, but they also have more amicable vibes, which would make affection easier. My vision of Gelato and Sorbet are also contenders here, though affection would be far easier with Gelato than with Sorbet, and the latter's vibes are not exactly light.
This leaves Illuso as the one who might have the hardest time getting close (simply because he's such a mean girl of a man), though it would not be impossible for him from the right angle - someone shoot me an ideal relationship dynamics ask on Illuso/Ghiaccio and I'll tell you more, ehe.
Now onto the affection part of it, because you did not mention forms of affection beyond being calm/happy/normal, so I wanted to add to all this that I feel like Ghiaccio's means of affection would be mirroring. If he trusts and feels comfortable around someone, he might show it by mirroring them somewhat. Melone gives me the impression of someone whose tone outside of missions is always calm and languid, and I can see Ghiaccio relaxing into adopting a calm and quiet tone when they talk. Prosciutto is very physical, especially with his hands, so I could see Ghiaccio touching him on his arms or back as he started getting comfortable. With Formaggio or Gelato, he would start laughing when they laughed and go with their flow, at least until he gets overstimulated. And I could also see getting close in the physical sense of him just, scooting close to those he trusts. You know you're on his shit list when you need to give him a wide berth, and you know you've got something special going on if he is very obviously closing the distance, even if he's not always aware that he's right in your face. He probably has his cooldown periods where he disengages, but he will come back and start hovering all over again and it's quite magical.
could i request some risotto headcanons about relationships? i’d especially love stuff to do with his ideal dates or love languages ,,
I'll do my best!
First, I checked my shipping tag and found two posts that are relevant here, one about what La Squadra looks for in a partner, and the other is specifically about relationship headcanons for Risotto! The latter has a bit about his love language, so for this ask I'll focus more on ideal dates!
I like to headcanon Risotto as aromantic, so to my mind, an "ideal date" is not necessarily a "date" per se, or at least it is not conducted with the idea of being particularly romantic so much as something he feels comfortable doing with his partner. Think long walks in his usual haunts, mostly places that are largely deserted because he doesn't like it when people stare at him. Such walks are very conducive to musing, and might be one of those rare moments in which Risotto actually talks at length. A more athletic partner could also join him on his morning runs, moving and sweating side by side, and then sprawling out on a bench in a derelict little park, blood rumbling as a sharp morning wind barks at them.
I also love to have him cook as a means of rekindling that feeling of home that is so precious to him in exile, so getting groceries together and deciding on the meal is definitely up there as well, even if people do stare. Cooking the meal together afterwards is the cherry on top, or if only Risotto cooks, then watching him work attentively and with clear appreciation is sure to make him feel good.
Hello! If requests are open and you write for this, could I request for what Risotto would do if his partner was on the asexual spectrum?
It's not my forte, I have an easier time with more general prompts, but here are my thoughts at last: I like to headcanon Risotto as aromantic, so this would be an aroace relationship where Risotto is somewhat stoically committed to the relationship, and his partner is very attached to him without the desire to get physical beyond affectionate gestures like hugging, cuddling or holding hands. Risotto is a capable man so I feel like if he ever got urges, he would simply retreat into privacy and take care of himself, and his partner would appreciate his coming back with a renewed sense of "and now I can enjoy the company of my partner in comfort". For a poly angle, I could see Risotto and a third partner having sex so those needs are met, and then making sure they take the time to pamper the ace partner in whatever way they like it.
Basically I like thinking of Risotto as a self-sufficient person who, if you set reasonable rules, will consider them and think, alright, this is something out of bounds and concerns me only, so I'm going to take care of it and come back when I have. And I think that's beautiful.
