Its ok!!
(I love german animal names. This moth is a "Braune Spätsommer-Bodeneule" wich can be translated as "brown late summer ground owl". Alternativ name "Rotbraune Erdeule" -> "redbrown earth owl". The english name is "square-spot rustic" wich is... cant you see its clearly an owl xD)
16/09/2023-Moth trap and other photos at home
Pictures in this set: 1. Lesser Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing, one of the stars of another moth trap last night an enigmatic species that I had in my room once before in 2021. It was lovely to see. 2 and 3. Garden Carpet, weirdly I saw that I'd seen this in the house in 2020 from my Facebook memories the other day and I thought that's one I need to see this year and as if by magic it was in the trap this morning. A pretty moth with a fascinating and enticing pattern. 4. A Large Yellow Underwing, a stunning large moth which we were impressed and excited by again today. 5. Another L-album Wainscot we had more than one in the trap today they've been a common one for us. 6. Hoverfly on a beautiful flower in the garden this morning. 7. Light Brown Apple moth. 8. Box Tree moth. 9. Starlings in the garden. 10. A pretty pink flower in the garden.
A stalwart of our traps alongside the Large Yellow Underwing appearing in all the ones we've done so far Square-spot Rustic completed the trap sightings. Collared Dove, House Sparrow and Goldfinch were great to see from home today too alongside Small White flying around, sedum, sunflower outside the garden and other flowers seen well. I heard Blue Tit at home again.
23rd September 2021-Buzzard, Tufted Ducks and more at Lakeside and home
I saw the moon which has been one of the ones I’ve photographed most when at its fullest the past few nights I think early on this morning which I took the first picture in this photoset of and the second of some interesting clouds which would go onto to obscure the moon later. I took the third picture in this photoset of a beautiful Goldfinch that was shining in the garden just before going out for my Lakeside lunch time walk, taking a great yellow themed photo of sunflower and some low-hanging of the yellow buddleia which mixed nicely with the sunflowers which are dominating the garden lately which I tweeted a picture of on Dans_Pictures too.
I did a fairly long walk at Lakeside through the eastern meadows then through the lakes and back along the northern path. I saw a Blackbird well something I’m seeing a little bit more of lately and Small White and Speckled Wood made great butterfly sightings, as well as darter dragonflies on the whole walk.
Crossing the steam railway track and going along the path through trees in the field north of the steam railway station and I was thrilled to see a bold Buzzard soaring gently through the air in a circular motion. I was so happy to make out the sweet brown and prominent markings of this big bird of prey. Seeing one of my favourite birds I had a great connection to nature. I took the fourth picture in this photoset of one flying alongside another and on the way out approaching the steps up to the northern path I saw a Buzzard again possibly the same bird and a lady I spoke to pointed it out to a child with her too and she saw me checking with my binoculars and asked if it was a Buzzard I said yes as we all marveled at this enormous bird flying through the sky. After a really good run of Lakeside and home Sparrowhawks in recent weeks, a Red Kite out the back before we went to Richmond and Bushy Park in my week off last week; Kestrel was a star bird of prey and bird generally of my day yesterday and it was Buzzard today. Buzzards are one of the most satisfying subjects for me and I always love it whenever one flying quite low presents a chance for a photo of this wonderful raptor. I took the fifth and sixth pictures in this photoset of Kornwestheim lake today.
I then walked through the grassy area between the lakes and with my bridge camera on its once weekly trip whilst the young Great Crested Grebes are around as well as my DSLR and big lens I looked for this another of my favourite birds. I did see one in the end getting some nice views of it at the centre of the lake seeing adults on both Kornwestheim and Concorde the two joined lakes today and it was fascinating to see the humbug youngster dive the famous thing grebes do so it felt a crucial stage in their development. I took the eighth picture in this photoset of this cute bird. But this was not before I spotted a single male Tufted Duck on the lake, this blue and white beauty shown in the seventh picture I took today in this photoset a bridge camera zoom in. This was the first Tufted Duck I’d seen at Lakeside for a few months they disappeared as the spring went on and usually its the months more towards and in winter I regularly see them here so it hinted just a little bit at what’s to come like Black-headed Gulls in winter plumage is doing lately. The Tufted Duck a very welcome sight. I enjoyed seeing and photographing pineappleweed in the grass between the lakes it was nice to see it again this year.
After work as twilight approached it was delightful to see several groups of nearly a dozen Greylag Geese flying past as they do a lot in the time of year outside breeding season (when they are based at Lakeside all the time to breed) so is symbolic of autumn and winter for me too. I got the ninth picture in this photoset of the first group. Its amazing I guess that the amount of times I’ve seen Greylag Geese from the house I’d never got or really tried for a picture. But with the few I took of them today I had a head start in terms of getting the picture hearing them probably about a minute before I first saw them and I happened to have my big lens on at the time still on from the walk I think. It was another great moment with birds flying today, today I took some pictures fitting the “on the move” theme in the photography group I am in on Facebook that has themes. The geese do remind me of Brent Geese at the coast flying by and over which is how I fell in love with that species in autumn and winter when they migrate here one of my favourite parts of the season.
There was then another beautiful set of cloud formations as the evening wound towards sunset, the Greylag Geese were flying against these so the Greylag Geese photos included a good sky and vice versa interestingly. Including some nice bits of orange in the sky at sunset. I took the tenth picture in this photoset of one of the greyer bits of sky this evening.
Wildlife Sightings Summary: Two of my favourite birds the Buzzard and Great Crested Grebe, Tufted Duck, Mallard, Coot, Moorhen, Greylag Goose, Back-headed Gull, Goldfinch, Blackbird, Starling, House Sparrow, Woodpigeon, Feral Pigeon, Collared Dove, brilliant views of Jackdaws on the roof visible from my room out the back today, a nice view of a Chiffchaff quickly too, Small White, Speckled Wood, darter dragonflies probably Common Darter and it was interesting to see another moth in the house tonight I believe a Square-spot rustic.
14th September 2024: Lesser Yellow Underwing moth this morning from a moth trap we did at home and beautiful views, a caterpillar and hawkbit on a great sunny walk from Andrew's Mare in the New Forest this afternoon.
On the walk splendid views of lots of Swallows, Blackbird, Buzzard, Kestrel, Roe Deer, Small White, Fox moth caterpillar, devil's-bit scabious, gorgeous scenes of bright mostly in flower bell and common heather, tormentil, lesser spearwort, daisy and holly berries were other highlights on the walk with Goldfinch, Magpie, my first Square-spot Rustics of the year one of my favourite moths and L-album Wainscot also enjoyed at home.
Giant House spider it was interesting to see, sky out the back and Square-spot Rustic tonight 08/09/2023.
2/9/23-Moth trap, other insects, birds and plants at home
Photos taken in this set: 1. Small Blood-vein moth, one I know well. 2. Setaceous Hebrew Character, one I had in my room in 2019 which I remember fondly a striking moth which I am very pleased to see today. 3. A gorgeous Treble-bar, one I saw at Blashford Lakes in 2021 it was a pleasure to see my first at home. 4. Another seen today that I recall from a sighting at home in 2021, L-album Wainscot a very fascinating and beautiful moth. 5. A Tapered Drone fly which it was a treat to see in the garden when home this evening. 6. Pretty sunflower in the morning light in the garden. 7. Square-spot Rustic. 8. A little moth. 9. Some pink geraniums in the garden before going out this afternoon, it's great to see these out after seeing them on their way last weekend. 10. My first ever Gold Triangle moth, an appealing one to see my 90th ever identified moth species in my life which was nice to reach.
Also in the moth trap were Large and Lesser Yellow Underwing and Vine's Rustic again, Double-striped Pug a favourite of mine, Morning-glory Plume moth, Box Tree moth, Shuttle-shaped Dart again a great one that I learnt on Tuesday and possibly a Light Brown Apple moth. I enjoyed doing a moth trap again, this new activity we've indulged in this week certainly has that exciting unknown opening presents on Christmas morning feel about it. I saw another hoverfly in my room this evening, and enjoyed buddleia, skimmia coming into flower, sedum, fuchsia and other flowers. I felt extremely lucky to hear and see closely Blue Tit in the garden this morning, with Goldfinch, Collared Dove, Starling heard and Small White butterfly seen from home other highlights.
3rd September 2021: Stock Dove, Red Admiral, moths and more at Lakeside and home
After enjoying lots of birds in the garden including some nice House Sparrows having a good splash in the bird bath this morning as I worked, I got to Lakeside and walked down the northern path from east to west. I encountered a brilliant Speckled Wood settled on a bush which I enjoyed looking at and took a photo of which I tweeted on Dans_Pictures. My cameras with me as planned for the lunch time walk of the sunniest day of the week was my once weekly visit with my regular lens which is with landscapes in mind on what seemed would be the sunniest day (I do still take landscapes on the walks with the big and macro lens when I only have those) and my now once weekly visit as the Great Crested Grebes have chicks again with my long distance specialist especially for birds bridge camera. I usually bring just one or two lenses/camera options occasionally three on the lunch time walks as they are a snippet of my working day where I watch wildlife and take photos whilst getting exercise rather than a full wildlife/photography trip so I don’t have the most time to switch lenses. I did toy with the idea of putting my macro lens in a bag and bringing it as sunny days at any time of year can present more macro photo opportunities but I didn’t. I took a rare butterfly picture of the Speckled Wood with my bridge camera as my regular lens couldn’t seem to focus on the butterfly this time. I took the first two pictures in this photoset down this path of a view and a stripped back cow parsnip a flower I have enjoyed so much this year which looked interesting.
Coming down the steps I noticed a family photographing something with a phone. And as I rounded the corner I was thrilled to see the gorgeous bright Red Admiral in the third picture in this photoset rested well on a bush in the sunshine. I redeemed myself with my new this year regular lens which I am pleased with for many reasons as I managed this picture and one other I tweeted. A precious moment as a different butterfly to the list of them I’ve been seeing this week and with Small Whites too a sunny late summer day brought a few out. A Small White nearly flew in through my window at home earlier. It then became a brilliant few minutes for appreciating and photographing the small things of nature, with fleabane and great willowherb in one photo, an interesting scene of a fallen or picked great willowherb flower on the water which looked beautiful in the sun I tweeted a photo of this and I saw some delightful pond skaters a highlight here in summer on Concorde and Kornwestheim the two adjoined lakes that I had seen a few times this year before so I was thrilled to see them and this was the first I managed a photo of this year which I also tweeted. There was a nice gaggle of them which was sweet to see. I then took the fourth picture in this photoset of the sun reflecting into the lake I enjoyed and photographed a lot of reflections today and also the fifth, sixth and seventh pictures in this photoset as I walked between the lakes.
I walked around beach lake and out via the path between the two fenced off nature reserve areas and took the eighth picture in this photoset of a gloriously partially eclipsed male Mallard on beach lake. On beach lake also the two Mute Swans were present and quite dominant. Hearing them flap was interesting radiating a bit across the water like a Greylag Goose, also present on this lake today, flapping did for me the other day. Lesser Black-backed Gull was on a buoy alongside the Black-headed Gulls too. The regular lens showed its worth in coming today with some landscape pictures I was pleased with on the walk especially of beach lake. But with only the Speckled Wood taken with the bridge camera as that stage as I saw an adult Great Crested Grebe and heard the chicks beside vegetation with their sweet calls but I didn’t get a chance for photos I considered if I was right to bring the bridge camera. It would have been an epic walk to have the macro lens so I thought I should have had this instead.
But in the northern fenced off nature reserve area I then found out why I was maybe meant to have this camera today. As I saw the group of sharply dressed and marked Stock Doves with their sweet little bursts of colour picking in the grass. If I was to have my big lens on my DSLR and bridge camera both with me on a walk this would be in the bit of the venn diagram where they cross. As it was far enough away for the bridge camera to be a good option, but I could have also made something of it with my big lens I think. Which I did do at this point with this bird last year, so it was the bridge camera’s go this year and I did get a picture I was quite pleased with which I tweeted. Had I had the normal and macro lens as it was never in my head to have my DSRL and the three lenses today I wasn’t bringing the big lens I would have kicked myself as I did last year with them as the Stock Doves would have been too far away for any photo. It was just fantastic to see the the Stock Doves again, they have made a delightful addition to the bird scene locally in late summer coming here when they did last year so its nice with continued working from home getting to spot that and know its likely year on year now.
My evening walk for a Friday was a little one around the green out the front tonight instead of Lakeside again as I was feeling a bit under the weather. I took the ninth picture in this photoset of a hedge and also liked seeing more autumn leaves with some nice yellow mixed in with the greens, taking a photo of a tree visible from the house with the house in the background so flipping things around a bit and getting nicely into the scene visible from the house and noticing again and photographing some mallow which I spotted the other side of the hedge when we returned home on Monday. It was great to take in the leaves as well as the divine purple flower of this plant which I hadn’t really before. It was lovely to take a photo of the quite rare bit of fleabane that is on the green out the front and not within Lakeside which I noticed recently. I also managed a photo tonight of a fantastic brown spider which has been on our door all week with another high up by it.
This evening I took in some glorious sky scenes like the one in the tenth and final picture I took in this photoset. Before bed some splendid moths flew in downstairs, I took photos of my first ever beautiful dark brown Spectacle and one I’d heard of before the Square-spot rustic I tweeted the photos and there were Box Tree moths in too.
