Teichralle (moorhen) am Pumpsee im Rosensteinpark, Bad Cannstatt.
Holland Park in London, UK (30 June 2025).
soooo cute
the dusky moorhen is a member of the rail family distributed throughout india, australia, new guinea, borneo, and indonesia. they are comfortable around other waterbirds, and are frequently found cohabitating with similar birds in the rail family. they can be distinguished from the similar common moorhen by the lack of a white stripe on their flank, which is present in the common moorhen. these birds feed both on aquatic materials and on land, with their diet consisting mainly of seeds, grasses, algae, fruit, mollusks and invertebrates. chicks are primarily fed nutrient-rich annelid worms and mollusks; as they grow older, they are given increasing amounts of plant material. during breeding season, they are territorial, but otherwise they are typically gregarious birds who may roost in large flocks for safety.
