For the wip meme: Ishval
[ask me about my WIPs!]
“Ishval” is the working title of my FMA:B time travel ishvalan AU. It uses my favorite time travel trope – the highly chaotic “everybody, yes I mean everybody, mentally time travels/gains future memories, and has to deal with that” type. So everyone has their memories from, oh, let’s call it a few years post-finale, or their memories up until the time they died.
The homunculi are alive. The Ishvalan genocide is in progress. Ed and Al are, like, 6 and 5, and Trisha is sick.
In this AU, Trisha is also Ishvalan. She was born Tirzah bat Arik, and the only doctors who can treat her and won’t turn her in to the government are the Rockbells, who are currently in the middle of Ishval. She and her two young sons are making their way through the desert to reach the doctors, dodging the Amestrian military, when they run into Tirzah’s cousin Yakov.
It takes Ed and Al a minute to recognize Yakov, without the massive X-shaped scar on his forehead.
Things proceed from there, but that’s the core idea of the fic - it needs a lot of editing before I post it, there’s a lot of stuff about Ishval and the genocide that I don’t think I handled to my satisfaction, but it was a NaNo fic from a few years ago and so for that I am quite proud of it!
@squirrelwrangler Father Bull and Mother Swan fromHeget’s fic The bull and the tides... 💔
squirrelwrangler replied to your post: you know the more I think about it the more I...
more than 20 hits and at least 2 kudos is my bar for success. yes, *that* low
the problem is that I’m in a fandom where the three biggest fics I can think of are massive, and the Big One dwarfs the other two significantly. We’re talking “fan renditions of original songs written for the story”, “fanart drawn without the author’s knowledge/request/commission”, “full-cast podfic with soundtrack and sound effects initiated by fans”, “multiple cosplay shoots”, “meetups at DragonCon with other fans of this specific fic”, “authors are bombarded constantly with asks about these fics”, “even people who’ve never read the stories know the names of the people who wrote them”.
that became my benchmark for Success, for Being A Successful Author
I’ve got to work to keep from convincing myself that Blessed Hands is a failure because it hasn’t got those things yet (and “not being finished” really isn’t a factor - the Big Fic was getting literally all those things despite still being in progress)
it’s just... disheartening. And I know I’m massively unrealistic and unfair to myself! But part of my brain is like “since I don’t have that is my work good?”
it sucks, frankly
Avatar the last airbender
God bless you <3
Favorite character: Zuko
Second favorite character: Toph
Least favorite character: Ozai
The character I’m most like: Katara
Favorite pairing: Zuko/Katara
Least favorite pairing: Aang/Toph
Favorite moment: My favorite episode is The Ember Island Players, because it covers EVERYTHING and is FANTASTIC. Best filler episode in television history. Favorite moment? Oof—I think the final Agni Kai, with Zuko, Katara, and Azula. That’s just... wow. So good. The music, the choreography, the emotions... all of it.
Rating out of 10: 10000000/10
send in a series! i’ll answer :-)
squirrelwrangler replied to your post “snippet from a DAV Mara fic”
tbh prefer your Mara to Zahn's- and omg right it's Batman (and Kadee is Alfred)
Oh wow, you are so right, Kadee is absolutely Alfred.
Wanted as a fan to thank you for "Fates Deferred", especially how you kept to the spirit of canon events without falling into the trap of 'hitting the canon signposts'. This is one of the most thoughtful and satisfying AUs, and I eagerly await each update.
Thank you! I am trying really hard to balance keeping things believably in line with canon while also fully exploring the implications of the AU and how much things have changed. It was one of my major motivating factors in deciding to write this story, actually, so I’m really glad you’re enjoying it for that!
DC Comics - Be it Superman, Batman, Green Lantern- whichever you are least familiar with. Young Justice
oh my god heget
okay….i watched one of the Batman cartoons as a kid - it had Dick Grayson as Robin and Barbara Gordon as Batgirl so those are the only two team members i’m familiar with. in the comics Batman adopts a bunch of kids/teens and they fight crime with him and sometimes they die - i think Damian dies, and so does Jason, but Jason comes back to life and is mad about it and refuses to talk to Batman for a while afterwards? they’re both Robin at some point. other Robins include….Tim? there’s also Stephanie Brown and Cassandra Cain but i don’t remember if they’re Robins or Batgirls or both. Batman dates Catwoman at some point, and she’s an archaeologist. there’s also someone named Kate Kane who is associated with the Bat Team but i don’t know who she is and for a while i wasn’t sure if she and Cassandra were different people but i think they are.
i think all i know about Superman is the bare bones stuff you can get in movies and tv shows - he’s an alien, his planet was destroyed, he grew up in Kansas on a farm, he’s a reporter for his day job, he’s dating Lois Lane, he and Batman and Wonder Woman team up sometimes. i can’t really think of anything else.
Green Lantern….i don’t fucking know. there’s some organization that draws members from a bunch of different planets and it’s called the Lantern Brigade or something, and they recruit people from all around the galaxy and give them magical powers of some kind? i think the powers come from objects, but i’m not sure if those are called Lanterns or if Lanterns are just the people who have them. anyway there are different colors of Lantern which i think correspond to different power sets. the Green Lantern is a human man and therefore probably the most boring of all of them. there was a Green Lantern movie sometime in the mid-to-late 00s which i didn’t see and was apparently very bad.
i literally have nothing on Young Justice. is it a league for young superheroes who don’t want to have to hang out with 30-somethings and immortals all the time? I think America Chavez might be in this group.
