Seat scraped. I realized that I need to thin out the seat a bit so my tenons make it through. Rookie mistake! #SSBO
Shop stool build in progress.
Shop Stool Build Off - conclusion
I figured I'd wrap up my #SSBO experience with a little reflection.
To start with, the purpose of joining wasn't to produce something super functional or pretty - I could probably have managed something decent but it would have meant doing things I already know how to do, and what's the fun in that? And there's no way I could compete (yet!) with the stuff I knew the pros and other experienced folks would produce.
... and snip right there. I had a couple paragraphs about all the things that went wrong, but that totally failed to capture the reality of the experience so I cut 'em. Yes, some things went wrong, but in the end I had a lot of fun, I learned a lot, I have a much better idea about what skills I need to work on next, and I got to feel like a part of the woodworking community.
I ended up with a stool that you could sit on. It was the right height to be comfortable for use with my rolling workbench, and the folding worked beautifully. The fact that it's so narrow that it's tippy and unsafe... well, that's a problem for that stool, but I can take the legs back off and re-use them (with longer dowels) to make a folding bench seat later.
So, yes. The stool itself won't see any use (too tippy!) but as an experience, I'm absolutely declaring my #SSBO a complete success. And a ton of fun. I can't wait for the next one!
I made a timelapse of my attempt to build myself a folding shop stool. Hopefully it entertains you!
