Plan B - F!X ☀️✨
Reader is a friend of Peggy’s who’s been on the team at the SSR for a few months. She hasn’t really bonded with any of the men at the agency, except Thompson, who’s her stupid hotshot mission plan buddy. That might change drastically when the four go out on a mission to try and recover some more of Howard’s stolen tech.
Black Coffee - X ☀️
Reader’s working at a coffee house, and they see plenty of people come in looking exhausted and searching for some caffeine to help. When a new face comes into the coffee shop, he manages to break the all-time record for the person closest to being an absolute zombie. Daniel Sousa’s been working day and night on a case for the SSR, and he’s in danger of falling asleep if he so much as stops moving. But, if he can make it through to the end of the case, it might just turn out to be worth it in more ways than one.
Assistant - F!X ☀️
Y/N is Howard Stark’s assistant, which is never a boring job. They’re in the middle of tearing their hair out trying to manage his crazy schedule when a surprise visit from a certain SSR agent shakes up their day.
New Office - X ☀️
Y/N’s been in love with their best friend Daniel Sousa since they both started working at the SSR, but he’s been hung up on Peggy since the first time he saw her. Now, however, Peggy’s turned him down for a date and he’s gone all the way across the country with a promotion to get some distance from her. Y/N went with him, but will it mean a change in anything more than location for the two of them?
West vs. East - X ☀️✨
Y/N is the LA SSR’s new nurse, a position they finally realized was incredibly important to have around after a few near-misses during the Whitney Frost case. They’ve only been there a week, but an all-SSR picnic and “friendly” East Coast/West Coast competition will give them plenty of chances to make new friends and more.
Sandy and Charlie - F!X ☀️✨
Y/N is starring in her first big picture, a Western produced by Howard Stark. When the actor playing her love interest no-shows, however, they’re going to have to get creative in finding a person to fill the role so the movie can be finished. Fortunately for them, the SSR needs Howard’s help on a case, and are willing to make some deals to get it.
The Unholy Alliance - X ☀️✨
Daniel and Y/N have been staring at each other longingly for months, and Jack and Peggy are tired of it. So, in a moment of history in the making, the two *team up* to find a way to get their coworkers to finally realize their feelings for each other.
No Way To Know For Sure - Part 1 Part 2 - F!X ☁️☀️✨
After a few months of friendship and a few more months of dating, Y/N and Daniel Sousa decided to call it quits when he moved out to LA to open the West Coast SSR. She was focused on her career with no desire to leave New York, her home, the place she had connections and established respect as a female SSR agent, the greatest city in the world. Daniel couldn’t turn down the promotion, and she didn’t want him to. So they parted ways, Y/N telling herself it didn’t hurt. But when Jack sends her out to LA to work with Daniel on a case, she realizes she is definitely not over him.
Date Night - F!X ☀️✨
Y/N and Daniel are ready to relax and listen to their favorite radio program together after a long week at the SSR. Unfortunately for both of them, Y/N’s older brother Jack Thompson has the spare key to the apartment, and he has a history of picking terrible times to drop in on his little sister.
Office Most-Eligible - F!X ☀️✨
When Jack ropes Daniel into eavesdropping on the telephone ladies’ breakroom, they both might hear a lot more than they’d bargained for.
The Ugliest Tie I’ve Ever Seen - X ☀️✨
Y/N has finally been transferred to LA, joining their boyfriend Daniel Sousa to help with a case. Unfortunately, he's picked up some new fashion in LA.
Drinks With Peggy - X ☁️☀️
Daniel's S/O came out of a program like Dottie's, so they're still learning how to be in a relationship and communicate with the people who matter.
The Gunmen Were A Relief - X ☀️✨
Daniel's planned out the perfect night to tell his SO about his real job as Chief of the LA SSR. Unfortunately for him, things don't quite go according to plan.

Putting work into an AI program without permission is illegal. You do not have my permission. Do not do it.
"Dammit Howard..." I muttered to myself as I stared at the three calendars in front of me. As Howard Stark's assistant, one of my many jobs included trying to manage his absurd schedule. And for what felt like the thousandth time this week, he'd overbooked himself without talking to me at all.
I sighed and scratched my head as I tried to figure out how to make everything work. My life would be a lot easier if I could just cancel some of his dates and force him to focus on more important things, but I knew that'd never fly. I'd just have to find some workarounds for his business meetings, and maybe send in an actor who looked like him for a few social commitments.
I'd just gotten into the zone and finally started to make some progress when I heard a knock at the door.
"Ugh, one minute!" I called, frantically erasing a large pencil mark that I'd accidentally scribbled across the page when the knock startled me. I brushed off the eraser shards, then stood and headed for the door. My hair was a mess, my skirt was askew, and I'm sure my makeup looked terrible, but I was too tired to care.
At least, I was too tired to care until I opened the door to find one of the most handsome men I'd ever seen. He was a little taller than me with brown hair and warm brown eyes, and he wore a yellow sweater vest with his suit. He leaned against a crutch with his left arm and held up a badge with his right.
"Hello there," he said, clearing his throat and blushing a little at my appearance. I was confused for a second, until I realized that I was answering Howard Stark's door. He probably thought we'd been... oh God.
"Hi!" I said, frantically trying to fix my hair. "Uh, my name's Y/N. I'm Mr. Stark's personal assistant. He's actually not home right now though, so, I don't know if I can help you..."
"He's not home?" asked the guy, looking surprised. I shook my head, and a little bit of the blush started to fade out of his cheeks. "Well do you know where he is? Or when he might be back?"
"Uh... that depends."
"On?"
"On who you are and why you're here."
"Oh!" The guy seemed to remember himself, and he flashed me his badge again before tucking it into his pocket. "Agent Daniel Sousa with the SSR. Pleasure to meet you."
"Likewise, I hope," I said. He extended his hand for a shake, and I took it. "Uh... what exactly do you want to talk to Mr. Stark about?"
"We found some suspicious tech on a recent assignment, and none of our scientists know what to make of it. We need a second opinion."
"Oh! Okay, great. That's good to hear. So it's not because he's wanted?"
"What? No. Should he be wanted?"
"No, of course not," I said, waving him off. "And it's not because the SSR thinks Howard's guilty of something and is trying to dig up dirt, or because they want to pin something on him that he definitely didn't do?"
"...No?"
"Great! He should be back in half an hour. You're welcome to come inside and wait," I said, stepping back and holding the door open. Daniel just stood there staring at me, clearly confused. After a second, he took a few cautious steps forward and into the house. I shut the door behind him, shot him a smile, then headed back into the kitchen where I'd been working.
I could hear Daniel's footsteps behind me, so I knew he was following. I subtly adjusted my clothes to look a little less disheveled, then turned to face him with a smile.
"Would you like anything to drink while you wait?" I asked.
"Uh... no, that's alright. I gotta ask though... what's with all the questions about me trying to investigate Howard Stark for being a criminal?"
I sighed and sat down in front of my three calendars again.
"It's a new protocol Howard wants me to go through with law enforcement people," I said, waving my hand as my eyes scanned the schedules. "After all that dustup with your agency trying to brand him a traitor and say he robbed his own vault, he doesn't want to just let anybody in until I ask a few ridiculous questions."
"That's... weird..."
"Yeah," I agreed. "And very in character for him."
Daniel huffed a laugh, and I smiled at him before going back to staring at the calendars. The polite thing to do as a hostess would be to talk to Daniel, but as attractive as he was, I had other work to do.
"So... what's this you're working on?" he asked, taking a few steps closer to look over my shoulder.
"Ugh, Howard's schedule," I said. "This calendar is actual important stuff that he needs to do that I scheduled for him, and this calendar is all the stupid stuff he scheduled for himself. My job is to somehow make it all fit on this third calendar without causing a paradox in the timeline or whatever."
Daniel laughed. "Man, I don't know how you're going to do that. He's triple-booked himself in some places."
"Believe me, I know. I've been going crazy all morning trying to figure it out."
"Well, I'd be happy to help," he said. I looked up at him, and he suddenly lost his confidence. "I mean, only if you want me to, of course. I don't want to step on any toes."
I gave him a bright smile and patted the seat next to me.
"I'd love some help. Thanks, Daniel."
"Of course. Between the two of us we should be able to come up with something, right?"
****************
Daniel wasn't wrong. We managed to get one week of Howard's month sorted out, which wasn't too bad. And the best part was, it was actually fun.
Usually when I spent the day trying to balance Howard's schedule, it was the absolute worst part of my job. I hated it, and by the end of the day, I'd well and truly gone crazy. But with Daniel here, it felt more like a puzzle we were solving together. It was fun, by some miracle.
I think it probably helped that after a few minutes, we'd been exchanging smiles and light touches and flirty jokes. He'd been a little nervous at first, but we'd both quickly relaxed as the day went on, and now it felt like we'd known each other forever.
"Alright, so for week two, what if you pushed his dinner reservations by an hour?"
"That might work..." I started. "But then he'd be out later, which would make him even less likely to get up in time for his early meeting the next day."
"Yeah..."
Daniel stared at the schedules in front of us in deep concentration, and I took the opportunity to study his face. He really was handsome, and now that we'd spent the past hour together (since Howard was late, as usual), I'd gotten to like his personality too. I smiled, and to my embarrassment, Daniel picked that moment to look up.
To my relief, he smiled back when he caught me staring. I leaned into him a little bit, and just like that, the calendars we'd been tearing our hair out over were forgotten.
"You know, I don't usually do this..." he started, looking a little nervous as he glanced around the room and then back at me. "And it's really, honestly not what I came here for. But.. well, I was wondering if you might want to-"
"Y/N!" Daniel and I quickly turned to look at the doorway into the kitchen as Howard Stark finally appeared. "Who's car is that in the drive- oh. Never mind, I suppose it's his."
Howard moved to the fridge without a second look at Daniel. He poured himself a glass of water, then leaned against the counter and turned back to the two of us.
"So, Agent Sousa, why are you here?" he asked. "Other than to flirt with my assistant, I mean."
"What? No, I'm not-"
"No no, that's not-"
"Don't bother trying to hide it," he said, staring at the both of us as we spluttered with embarrassment. "I've spent enough time flirting with women to know what it looks like. I just can't believe it's happening!"
"What do you mean?" I asked as Howard started to move around the room, picking up random bits and bobs of his inventions. Howard almost never sat still for more than a few minutes.
"I mean, I tried flirting with you for months after I hired you! And nothing! It's like you were immune! Meanwhile, Agent Sousa over here shows up and talk to you for- how long have you been here Sousa?"
"Uh... about an hour..."
"For an hour! And you're practically giddy getting ready to make plans for a date with him!"
Daniel and I just stared at Howard in stunned silence as he continued to move around the room. He adjusted one of his newer inventions still sitting on the dining room table, squinted at it, then adjusted it again. Finally, he turned back to us with his hands on his hips like absolutely nothing was weird at all.
"Well, I'll be in my lab working on one of my new projects," he said. "Y/N, you can show him in once he finishes asking you on a date."
With that, he turned on his heel and walked out of the room. I watched him go with my mouth open in shock. I honestly had no idea what to do.
After a few seconds, I worked up the nerve to turn back to Daniel. He had a deep blush on his cheeks and neck, but he also had a small smile on his face.
"I... am so sorry about him," I said. "Since you've clearly met him before you probably knew he was like that already, but even for him, that was... a lot."
Daniel shrugged. "It's okay. And he's not wrong. I, uh... I actually was going to ask if you'd be interested in getting coffee sometime."
"Sometime?"
"Well, I was actually thinking today. Maybe after I talk to Stark? We can finish off the calendar together if you want to, and have a real date while we're at it."
I smiled. "That sounds perfect."
"It does? I mean, it does!" said Daniel, a giddy smile breaking out on his face. He took a few steps backwards, looking like he couldn't quite believe his luck. He smiled at me even as he backed into a table, then quickly corrected himself. "I'll see you in a little bit, then."
"Yeah, you will."
He nodded, then turned and left the room. I just watched and waited. In his excitement, Daniel forgot he didn't know where Howard's lab was. And right on cue, he reappeared in the doorway.
"Uh... I don't actually know where I'm going..."
"I was wondering how long it would take you to figure it out," I said, giving him a smile as I stood and headed towards him. "Come on, I'll show you where he is. Be warned though: Howard gets even crazier when he gets in his lab environment."
"How is that even possible?"
"You know, there are still being studies done. We're all trying to figure it out, but the answers just aren't there."
Daniel laughed, and I smiled at the sound as we walked through the hallways of Howard's house. Even though we'd technically just met, I absolutely adored Daniel, and I couldn't wait to get to know him even better tonight.

"Hey, Y/L/N."
I looked up to find none other than Agent Jack Thompson swaggering towards me from across the bullpen. I put my pen down and rested my chin on my hand, giving him my full attention.
"It looks like it's you and me working the night shift tonight."
I sat up a little straighter at that, my fake interest turning very real. I'd been trying to talk Dooley into letting me take a night shift for some added responsibility for a long time, but now it was apparently really happening. And with Jack Thompson, no less.
"Alright, great!" I said, giving Jack a smile before looking back to the papers I was working on. "Ugh, I'm gonna need a lot more coffee though."
"You and me both," said Jack. He walked around to my side of the desk and perched on the edge, so I turned to look at him. He gave me a charming smile. "I'll brew us a fresh post as soon as Krzeminski's gone for the night so he can't steal it all or otherwise fuck it up."
I smiled back. Since a few months ago when I'd joined the SSR, Jack and I had maintained a friendly flirty relationship. It never went further than talking, though, despite Jack asking me out a few times now. I liked him a lot of the time, but he acted like a sexist ass enough of the rest of the time that I knew a date would be a mistake.
"Having tried your version of the office coffee before, I feel like I might have to pass..."
Jack just scoffed, but he couldn't keep a slight smile off his face anyway.
"Well, it's gonna be my coffee or nothing," he said, pushing off my desk to go back to his own work. "Choice is yours, sweetheart. You've got a couple hours to think about it."
I just smiled and shook my head at him as he left. I stared after him across the office, until I noticed someone else's eyes on me. I turned to see Daniel Sousa, my good friend and desk neighbor, staring at me with a raised eyebrow. My smile immediately dropped into a glare.
"Need something, Daniel?"
He shrugged. "Nope. Except maybe an explanation for what the hell is going on with you and Thompson."
"Catch me up on you and Peggy first."
Daniel and I held each others' stares for a few beats, then Daniel held out his hand.
"Agree to both drop it?"
"Agreed."
I shook his hand and we nodded to each other, then turned back to our own work. Tonight would be interesting, to say the least, but on the bright side, none of my lovely judgy friends would have a front row seat to Thompson and I dancing around each other this time.
****************
"Fresh cup of coffee, hot off the pot."
I made a show of squinting suspiciously at the coffee mug as Jack walked over and set it down in front of me. The last of the day-shift agents had left about ten minutes ago, which meant Jack and I were officially on our own.
"You can't look at it like that until you've tried it."
I turned my expression on Jack. "I can and will look at it however I want to."
Jack sighed. He walked to his own desk, then pulled his chair across the room to sit next to me. He sat and scooted a little closer, then reached across my desk and slid the coffee mug in front of me. He took a sip of his own mug pointedly.
"Come on. Try it."
I made a big show of sighing dramatically (which made Jack smile), then reached forward to grab the mug. Slowly, I lifted it to my mouth, pausing to sniff it first. The smell alone helped to wake me up, which was a serious blessing.
Jack watched me the entire time until, finally, I tried a sip of the coffee. To my surprise, it tasted amazing. Hands-down some of the best coffee I'd ever had. My eyebrows shot up, and I turned to look at Jack in surprise. He had a smug smile on his face.
"Not bad, huh?"
I took another sip of the coffee, and my eyes immediately narrowed.
"There is no way you made this," I said. Jack pretended to look offended, leaning back in his chair and placing a hand over his heart.
"Excuse me? Sweetheart, I'm insulted that-"
"Jack, that coffee pot is old as shit and has been used by literally every person in the office since before the war. There is no way anyone could make coffee this good in it."
Jack cleared his throat and looked away, but it wasn't enough to hide the slight blush rising on his neck.
"Jack, come on," I said, leaning forward and putting a hand on his shoulder. "You can admit it. Where did you get the coffee from?"
He mumbled something that I couldn't quite hear. I grinned as I leaned in a little closer, until we were basically cheek to cheek, and I reached my arm all the way around his shoulders.
"Say that one more time?"
"I went out to your favorite coffee shot and got it," he said, finally straightening up. The space between us grew again, but as my hand fell away from his shoulders, he caught it in his own hand and held it. "I left twenty minutes ago to pick up two cups for us, alright?"
I just stared at him in shock. He stared back, and for one of only a handful of times that I'd seen, he stared back without any hint of posturing.
"Jack, that's actually... that's really sweet," I finally managed to say. He sighed through his nose and looked down at our hands. Slowly, almost absently, he entwined our fingers, then at last looked up at me again.
"I don't think I've exactly been hiding the fact that I have a thing for you, Y/L/N. And at the risk of making this whole night incredibly awkward for the both of us..." he paused and cleared his throat, and I braced myself for what I knew was coming. "I wanted to ask if you'd like to get dinner with me this weekend, when we're both off."
I sighed. Now it was my turn to stare at our hands, but unlike Jack, I didn't look up as I started speaking.
"Jack, I just... I don't think it's a good idea."
"Why not?" he asked, leaning in and gripping my hand a little tighter. "Every time I flirt with you, you flirt back. But every time I ask you to go do something, you say no. I just... I don't get it, Y/N. Are you not really interested?"
I took a deep breath as I forced myself to meet his eyes. Our faces were only inches apart, and I hated the way it made my heart race.
"You're very handsome, Jack, and charming. But I like our relationship as it is right now."
"Well I don't!" Jack paused, taking a few beats to collect himself, and when he looked up at me again he seemed more genuinely upset than he'd ever been in front of me. "Y/N, I have never felt about someone the way I feel about you. You think I normally walk ten blocks to get a girl her favorite kind of coffee?"
"Jack-"
"Listen, if you don't feel the same way about me, that's fine. I'll find a way to deal with that. But I need to hear you say it. I can't deal with this constant flirting and only flirting anymore."
I pulled my hand out of Jack's and instead ran it through my hair as I stared at anything in the room but him. I did not ever want to have this conversation, especially not in the middle of my first time working the night shift, but Jack was right. I owed him the truth.
"I'm sorry for stringing you along," I started. From my peripheral, I could see Jack tense. "I'd be lying if I said I didn't have feelings for you."
"But?"
"But... I don't know, Jack. I just don't think I can do it. It drives me crazy, because sometimes, you're the sweetest person I've ever met. You're getting me coffee and we're in the field working like a well-trained unit, back to back, and you have these moments where everything else fades away and it feels like I can see your heart shining through your words and your eyes and then..."
I took a deep breath and deflated as I let it out.
"And then other times you're telling Peggy to take the lunch orders and do your filing. And you're acting like this arrogant douchebag swaggering around the office and listening to absolutely no one, and I hate it. That part of you, Jack... I can't do it. I can't date somebody who spends so much of their time acting like that. No matter how much I like everything else about them."
Jack took a long, deep breath as he sat back in his chair. He stared off at some distant point in the office, slowly nodding his head as he worked through everything I'd told him. I didn't push him for an answer. I just waited to hear what he might have to say.
"How about this," he finally said, leaning forward in his chair and resting his arms on his knees as he looked at me, nothing but sincerity in his face. "You give me... a week. To get my act together a little bit. If you like what you see, we go to dinner next weekend. If you don't... then I'll drop it."
"Jack... you can't completely change your personality just because you want to go on a date with me."
"It's not completely changing my personality. It's called growth, Sousa talks about it all the time. Besides, you said yourself there were parts of who I am, maybe even the majority, that you actually liked... right?"
I noticed a hint of self-doubt creeping into Jack's expression, and I couldn't help my heart melting.
"Right... Okay, why not. We'll give it a try. But I don't want you pretending to be somebody you're not or stifling the comments for next week and next week only-"
Jack fixed me with a look that said Really? and it stopped me mid-sentence.
"Y/N. You're an SSR agent with one of the best bullshit meters I've ever seen. I think we both know it'll take you about two seconds to call me out if I'm not being genuine."
I grinned. "Damn right."
We shared a laugh, and some of the tension in the room seemed to melt away. After a beat, Jack cleared his throat and sat up straight, moving his chair just slightly further away from mine.
"Well, now that we've dealt with that..." he started. I smiled. "We should probably start taking care of some of this shit Krzeminski let pile up while he was spending the day eating his lunch and making bad coffee."
"Looks like it's a lot of filing. Why don't you take care of it and I'll hold down the fort in here?"
Jack shot me a look that clearly said he knew exactly what I was doing. Still, to his credit, he grabbed the files and stood.
"If you don't see me in an hour, it means I drowned under the piles of paperwork Carter and Sousa let pile up in there every time I told one of them to file something for me."
"I'll tell the reporters the karma got you," I said, shooting Jack a wink. He just chuckled and headed back into the filing room. Obviously it was way too early to actually call anything, but I couldn't help being a little hopeful at the attitude shift he'd already made.
After tonight, maybe we were finally on the path to the more loveable side of loveable asshole. And if so, I absolutely couldn't wait for our date next weekend.

I opened the door to my room at the Griffith at the sound of a commotion in the hallway. I'd heard Angie Martinelli yelling and slamming doors, and I also thought I'd heard my girlfriend Peggy's voice calling after her.
When I looked out into the hallway, however, there was no one in sight. I took a deep breath, briefly debating whether to go back into my room and just go to sleep.
Peggy and I had been dating for a few months, after Angie had helped set us up. She'd moved into the Griffith and across the hall from me about a week ago, and I thought everything was perfect. Unfortunately, I was wrong. Peggy had been weirdly distant lately, brushing off Angie and I or completely avoiding us. I had no doubt that the commotion in the hallway came from Peggy doing it again to Angie.
I sighed. I cared about Peggy, a lot. And if I wanted to keep her in my life (which I did), then I needed to fight for her. That meant going over there and trying to talk to her, even if it was ten o'clock and all I wanted to do was go to sleep.
I closed the door to my apartment and crossed the hall to knock on Peggy's. I heard a thump from inside, followed by loud shuffling as she called through the door.
"Just a second!"
I shook my head. Peggy had something seriously strange going on in her life, and I'd been pretending not to notice almost the entire time we'd known each other. I was starting to think that needed to come to an end.
After a few more seconds, Peggy opened the door in her bathrobe, looking flustered. She smiled when she saw me, but I could still see some stress written on her face.
"Hello darling," she said breathlessly. "What's going on?"
"I was about to ask you the same question," I said, pushing past her and through the door. I could tell she didn't want me in there, but I pushed through anyway. That was more of an Angie move than I usually pulled, but Peggy and I seriously needed to talk.
"Y/N, I'm so sorry, but now is really not a good time..." she said, hovering by the still open door with her arms crossed over her chest.
"I figured, since I heard you throw Angie out," I said. Peggy looked surprised, but I just continued. "Peg, I really, really like you. You're the coolest, most wonderful person I've ever been with. But it's ten o'clock at night, and you're trying to rush the people you care about out of here like you're late for a job interview. I'm not an idiot, I know there's something you're not telling me. Something big. Tell me the truth."
"Y/N..."
"No, hold on. Let me finish." Peggy sighed, but nodded at me all the same. I took a deep breath, trying to summon the courage for what I was about to say. "I... I love you, Peggy Carter. And it's okay if you don't feel the same way. And we haven't really been dating that long in the grand scheme of things, so you're entitled to some privacy, Peg, if there's stuff you don't want to tell me. But I care about you, and I want to be around for the long haul. So if there's a big part of your life you're not telling me about, I'd really like to be let in on the secret."
Peggy sighed heavily and looked at the ceiling like she was praying for strength. Then, she turned on her heel and shut the door of her apartment before coming over to sit next to me on her bed. She sat sideways, one leg up on the bed, so she could look me straight in the eyes. She took both my hands in hers, and the look on her face was more serious than I usually saw.
"I love you too, Y/N." My heart soared, and I couldn't keep a giant smile off my face. "And I want you to be a part of my life for the long haul, too. But I'm not supposed to share this part of my life with anyone until we're engaged."
I sighed. "Alright, Peg. Fair enough-"
I stopped when she squeezed my hands tightly. I looked back up at her, and her beautiful brown eyes were looking intently into mine.
"I'm going to tell you anyway."
My heart stopped in my chest. All the air went out of my lungs, and a different, hopeful kind of smile spread across my face. Never in my wildest dreams did I think Peggy really felt that way about me.
"But Y/N, I can't emphasize this enough: You cannot tell anyone what I'm about to tell you. Alright? Not even Angie."
I nodded. "I swear, Peggy. Your secret's safe with me."
She nodded, then took a deep breath. "Alright. I don't really work at the phone company."
I scoffed. A little rude, I know, but I honestly couldn't help it.
"Well no shit, babe. I doubt anybody at the phone company's keeping the same hours you keep, or limping around like you do sometimes when you won't tell me what's wrong."
Peggy smiled. "Fair enough. The truth is... I work for the SSR."
My eyebrows shot up. I'd thought up a dozen different possibilities for what Peggy's secret might be, and I'd be lying if I said 'secret agent' never crossed my mind. But I'd also be lying if I said I actually thought that might be the truth!
"The SSR? Like, the super secret badass government agency?" I asked.
"Yes, that one."
"Peggy... that's so cool!" I yelled, jumping a little on the bed. I quickly lowered my voice, leaning in towards Peggy with a smile on my face. "My girlfriend is even more of a badass than I originally thought."
Peggy absolutely beamed at me as she squeezed my hands again. She leaned closer and closed the little remaining distance between us to give me a soft kiss on the lips, and I absolutely melted.
I pulled back after just a few seconds, staring into Peggy's eyes intently. As much as I wanted to keep kissing her all night long, I needed to make sure she understood what I was saying first.
"Peggy. Thank you for telling me. And for trusting me. I mean, seriously. It means the world to me that you trust me like that, and want me to be part of every aspect of your life."
Peggy smiled warmly, then raised a hand to gently cup my cheek.
"I've never met anyone like you before, my darling," she said. "It means the world to me to have you as a part of my life."
I smiled back, and if it were possible, I think I'd be actually glowing like the sun. I leaned forward again to close the distance between Peggy and I, kissing her on the mouth and trying to pour all the love in the world into it. We stayed like that for a few minutes, holding each other tight and reveling in our love for each other.
After a few minutes, reluctantly, Peggy pulled back. She gave me an apologetic look, then stood.
"As much as I'd love to stay here with you, I can't," she said. "I have to go meet with a friend to work on an assignment."
I couldn't help smiling. "That is the coolest sentence I've ever heard anyone say. My girlfriend is an absolute badass."
Peggy laughed as she ducked under the bed, dragging out a massive bag of gear. She smiled at me as she straightened up.
"I'll be back, hopefully in a few hours," she said. "You're welcome to stay here, if you'd like."
A giant grin broke out on my face. "I'd love that."
"Alright then," said Peggy, her expression mirroring my own. "I suppose I'll see you when I return."
"I might be asleep," I warned her, scooting back on the bed as she headed for the door.
"I certainly wouldn't blame you!" she called over her shoulder. I smiled as the door swung open and then shut behind her, still basking in the joy of the past few minutes. Peggy was the woman of my dreams, and after tonight, I felt more confident than ever that we might actually be able to go the distance.
She was the one. And we were going to make it work.

Putting work into an AI program without permission is illegal. You do not have my permission. Do not do it.
I sighed as the words on the paper in front of me started to blur. I'd been staring at it for so long that the English language was starting to lose all meaning.
I was working the night shift at the SSR, along with the chief of the SSR (and my friend), Jack Thompson. He was working away in his office with the door open, and I was trying not to pass out face-first on my desk.
I sighed and pushed back in my chair. I needed to take a break, or else I wasn't going to get anything done.
Why did Daniel get the exciting night shifts? He got calls that he had to go out and respond to, meanwhile I just had to sit at a desk for longer than usual.
Maybe I'd ask Jack if I could be on night duty with Daniel next time instead. Although, that would mean Daniel and Peggy wouldn't be spending all night together, which I didn't want to stand in the way of...
I shook my head and decided to think about it later, once I was more awake. I stood and decided to get some coffee to try and help me through this stack of papers, but headed for Jack's office first to see if he wanted some too.
When I got to the doorway, I found the chief in exactly the position I was trying to avoid: face down and passed out unconscious, drooling on the stack of papers he'd been trying to read.
I smiled and huffed a little laugh as I crept into the office. There was a blanket in the corner for those really long nights when it made more sense to sleep here than go home, so I grabbed it and headed back towards Jack. Carefully, so I didn't wake him up, I draped it around his shoulders then stepped back with a smile.
I started heading for the door again, intending to let Jack get some much-needed sleep, but I stopped short at the sound of my name from behind me. I turned, expecting to see Jack groggily looking up at me, but he was still fast asleep.
"Y/N..." he muttered again. My heart jumped as I realized he was talking in his sleep. About me. "Mmm... mhmm. Bet you've never been kissed like that... You're sweeter than sweet, sweetheart..."
I felt heat rise to my cheeks at Jack's words. I'd had a thing for him for a few months now, but I'd never imagined he felt the same way about me.
Still, I didn't want to stay here and keep eavesdropping. I moved back towards the door, but I was so flustered I hit a squeaky floorboard I usually knew to avoid.
I froze, hoping Jack would still be fast asleep. Unfortunately for me, I heard him stir and groan as he sat up in his chair. I turned around with a smile, hoping he wouldn't be able to tell how nervous and giddy I was.
"Y/N?" he asked, rubbing his eyes as he looked at me blearily. "Ugh, don't tell me I passed out."
"Sorry Jack, but I have to. There's drool on your papers to prove it."
He huffed a laugh as he looked down, then noticed the blanket wrapped around his shoulders.
"Huh. Thanks, Y/N." I smiled and nodded. Jack stared holes in the floor as he blinked a few times, trying to get his bearings after waking up. His eyebrows furrowed, and then he whipped his head up to look at me, a small hint of panic on his face. "Hey... uh... I didn't, like... talk in my sleep or anything, did I?"
My heart sped up and my face and neck felt burning hot. I liked Jack, and apparently he liked me back, but I wasn't sure this was how I wanted him to find out. In a moment of panic, I decided to lie.
"Uh, no. No, you didn't," I said, just hoping he believed me. Then, with the help of a random surge of courage, I added: "Why?"
"Oh, no reason," he said, looking away and blushing bright red. "I just do that sometimes and... uh, I didn't want to bother you. In the bullpen."
"Oh! Of course, yeah. Well, you don't have to worry about that," I said, laughing nervously as I shifted in place. What was wrong with me?
Apparently Jack was having the same problem. He shifted in his seat, looking anywhere but at me.
I sighed, then turned to start heading back to my desk. I accidentally stepped on the same creaky floorboard that had woken up Jack, and by some miracle, another burst of courage came to me at just the right time.
"Hey..." I said, turning back around to face Jack. He looked at me curiously, his face still a little red, and I took a deep breath to steel myself. "Would you maybe... I don't know... want to go out with me sometime? Maybe for drinks after work tomorrow? I know it might seem a little sudden, I just... well, we keep talking about hoping Peggy and Daniel get together on one of these night shifts, so I thought I might try to take our own advice, so to speak."
I'd barely been able to look at Jack as I spoke, my eyes darting all over the room instead. When I finished my question, however, I forced myself to meet his eyes again. My heart stopped when I found him looking shocked, eyes wide and mouth open. What did that mean? Was that a good thing or a bad thing?
"You wanna go out with me?" he asked, sounding like he couldn't quite believe it.
"Well... I mean, yeah. But only if you want to, of course!" I said, backpedaling as fast as I could. What if what he'd said in his sleep was a coincidence? What if he didn't really like me like that, and it was just a weird dream? What if-
"Are you kidding? I'd love to go out with you," he said, smiling as he stood from his desk and crossed the room to me. "I'm just kicking myself that you had to be the one to ask. I should've done something a long time ago."
I smiled as he came to a stop in front of me, leaning one arm on the doorframe above my head. My heart raced a little bit as he smiled at me.
"I am curious though..." he said. "What brought this on?"
"Oh, I don't know," I said, shrugging and grinning as I backed up a few steps. "Just the night shift, I guess. Say, do you want me to get you some coffee to help us get through the rest of this shift? Lemme guess... you want it sweeter than sweet, sweetheart?"
All the blood drained out of Jack's face as he realized what I'd said. I just smiled wider, giving him a wink and blowing him a kiss before turning to go get the coffee I'd wanted in the first place.
"Don't worry, Jack," I called back to him as I went. "It worked out. I've had a crush on you for months, but I never would've gotten up the courage to ask you out if you didn't talk in your sleep."
I heard him scoff behind me, and I turned to see him smiling and shaking his head. I just grinned back, then turned the corner to the office coffee pot.
I officially took back everything I'd said about wanting more interesting night shifts. Daniel could keep his exciting calls to action; I was perfectly happy having a calm night alone with Jack Thompson.

"Y/N, where'd we put that hammer?"
"You mean that hammer sticking out of your back pocket?"
Daniel blushed as he realized his mistake, and I grinned at him. He sheepishly took the hammer out of his back pocket and met my gaze.
"You know, I think you'd lose your own head if it weren't for me keeping things straight," I said. Daniel smiled.
"I think you just might be right."
With that, he turned to start working on one of the new desks for the bullpen. We'd been here since six this morning getting things ready for the grand opening of the SSR LA office in a few days, and now it was just a bit past lunch time. We'd made good progress, but there was still a long way to go.
"What do you think the odds are of us actually finishing this place in time for the opening on Monday?" I mused as I worked on my own desk, next to Daniel.
"I feel like we've got a pretty good shot," he said. He paused, then continued, "Besides, there's a few areas we can use to hide the rough edges. My office, for example, since none of the other agents will be going in there."
"Daniel, I say this with no judgement, but I think it's a terrible idea to plan on leaving your office as a disaster zone on the first day the new agents arrive."
"That sure sounded like judgement to me," Daniel said with a smile in my direction. I smiled back, then we continued our work in comfortable silence.
Three months ago, Daniel had taken a job opportunity to leave the New York SSR and head up the LA division as chief. And two months and twenty-nine days ago, I'd taken a job offer to follow him.
Despite the fact that Daniel's new job was decidedly a promotion, I knew the real reason he'd taken it was to get away from Peggy. He'd been completely in love with her since she walked into the office (understandably), and after she turned him down on the offer of a date, he'd just wanted to get out.
I could definitely relate. Daniel and I had been best friends since we both started working at the SSR. And the entire time he'd been hung up on Peggy, I'd been hung up on him. I kept hoping he'd notice that I was interested in him, especially since Peggy didn't seem to be, but he never did. So, like an idiot, I'd followed him to LA anyway on the off chance that something would change.
So far, it hadn't. But even if it never did, I at least got to keep spending time with him and having him in my life.
"Alright, that's one more desk down," said Daniel, leaning back with a sigh as he screwed in the last bolt on his desk.
"Make that two," I said, finishing up my desk right after him.
"Alright, so we've got one more desk to assemble in here, and then a bunch of filing cabinets. Which one do you want?"
"Desk."
"Alright, I'll meet you at the filing cabinets when we're done."
We worked through the rest of the day, just the two of us, banding together as a team and talking and laughing every step of the way. The moments that had us leaning against each other, supporting each other as we worked towards the same goal or rested after a long day of work, made everything else absolutely worth it.
****************
"It's times like these I start to regret telling Rose to take the weekend off," muttered Daniel as we worked to assemble everything in his office. The rest of the building was pretty much done, other than a few final touches if we had time, and as long as we could finish setting up the Chief's office tonight, we'd be ready for opening tomorrow.
"I don't know, I think it's good that we gave her some time to adjust to the city. We've been here a lot longer than she has, after all, and we've barely settled in."
"True," laughed Daniel. "Although I gotta say, the change in weather wasn't too hard to adjust to."
"Agreed. I am not gonna miss those New York winters."
We shared a laugh as I finished one of the filing cabinets and Daniel started on the second one. I set my tools down and crossed the room to grab the ladder and a lightbulb, then set up right under the light.
"We're so close, I can taste the freedom," I joked. "We need to go do something to celebrate once this damn place is actually finished."
"I agree. Got any bright ideas?"
I tried not to lose my focus as I climbed the ladder and reached the bulb at the top. I knew it wouldn't be a date, but I couldn't stop my heart from speeding up just a little at the thought of Daniel agreeing to go spend time together one-on-one outside of the context of work.
"Maybe we could go find a fun bar or club somewhere?" I mused, trying to sound casual as I worked on the light. "Or we could take advantage of the warm weather and hit the beach. Depending on how fast we finish all this, we might even get to see the sun set into the ocean."
Daniel didn't respond right away, and I swear I almost had a heart attack before he finally responded.
"That sounds like a great idea."
I could hear the smile in his voice, and butterflies exploded in my chest. I tried to keep cool so he wouldn't notice, and I got so wrapped up in it, that I leaned back just a little too far on the ladder.
I gasped and dropped the lightbulb as I flailed and tried to regain my balance. Time seemed to slow as I missed a grab at the ladder and fell backwards, losing my chance to catch myself and falling closer and closer to the ground.
Just as time started to speed back up and I braced myself for a very painful impact, I hit something else instead. Something much softer and more forgiving than the ground.
I looked up to find myself in Daniel's arms. He stared down at me with a bit of panic and worry on his face, despite how securely he now held me.
"You alright?" he asked.
"Yeah... Are you?"
"I'm perfectly fine," he said, giving me a reassuring smile. "The crutch even finally had a bonus since it helped brace me to catch you and keep us both from going down."
We shared a smile, and as Daniel stared at me and held me in his arms, my heart sped back up as fast as if I were falling off the ladder again.
"I, uh... you should probably put me down," I said reluctantly. My face felt like it was on fire, and I could only hope Daniel didn't notice how nervous he made me.
To be fair, he'd never noticed before.
"Oh, uh, yeah," said Daniel, seeming to remember himself. "Careful, there's some glass on the floor."
He looked down to try to avoid the glass as he gently set me down. I regained my balance and stood, but kept my hands on Daniel's shoulders. He kept his hands around my waist.
He didn't say anything as he stared at the ground, then suddenly looked up at me. Our eyes met, and Daniel's were wide, staring at me like he'd never seen me before.
"Daniel?" I asked softly.
His hands tightened on my waist, and he just kept staring at me. Finally, he spoke.
"I... this is gonna make me sound like an idiot, but... you look beautiful. Even with the dust from the ceiling in your hair. I, uh... I don't know why I never realized it before."
I raised an eyebrow at him, and he quickly looked away. He stared at the wall as he continued, apparently thinking out loud.
"You know, it felt like my world was ending when Peggy turned me down for that date. I'd built it up so many times in my head, built her up so many times, that it broke my heart into a thousand pieces. And the only thing that made me feel better was spending time with you."
My heart stopped dead in my chest. No way this was what I hoped it was. Right?
Daniel looked back at me, his eyes wide but a little less confused when they met mine.
"I almost had a damn heart attack when I saw you falling off that ladder," he said. "On the bright side... it finally made me open my eyes."
"Daniel..." I breathed. "What are you saying?"
"I... listen, I don't want to make you feel like you owe me anything, alright? It's more important to me to be your friend than anything else-"
"Daniel. Spit it out."
He sighed and spent a few seconds looking everywhere but at me. I noticed a serious blush rising on his neck, and my heart had sped up to a million miles an hour by the time he looked back at me.
"I'm in love with you. I'm an idiot for not seeing it sooner, but there you go. I... I really do understand if you don't feel the same way."
I couldn't stop myself from laughing out loud as a gigantic smile spread across my face. Daniel looked worried, but I explained before he could get too far ahead of himself.
"You're damn right you're an idiot for not seeing it sooner. I spend years quietly in love with you, and you're just now figuring it out?"
"Wait, what? Really?"
"Really, truly. You think you were the only one going crazy during that year you spent pining after Peggy?"
Daniel laughed, then pulled me a little closer to him. "Suddenly, I'm glad we gave Rose the weekend off."
"Yeah, well. I was thinking ahead."
Daniel looked like he was about to say something else, but I didn't give him the chance. I'd already waited long enough to do this.
I leaned in, steadily closing the distance between us until our lips met. Daniel seemed surprised for half a second, and then he kissed back even harder. We stayed locked like that, Daniel pulling me tighter to him as I deepened the kiss. The momentum made me stumble a step forward, and when my shoes crunched the glass beneath my feet, it was enough to briefly drag me out of the moment.
"Uh... we should probably clean up the broken glass before we... continue," I said, forcing myself to get the words out. Daniel groaned in protest, but he took a step back nonetheless.
"Yeah. Yeah, you're probably right."
We both stared at the mess around us, then our eyes met again and twin smiles broke out across our faces.
"Let's make this quick, alright?" he said. "We've got a lot of lost time to make up for."
"Way ahead of you, Daniel." I shot him a wink, then turned to start cleaning up the glass. Daniel had a few filing cabinets to go, and I still had to deal with the lightbulb, but after that? We had all the time in the world.
Summary: Peggy and Daniel have been ignoring and avoiding their feelings for each other forever. Everyone in the office knows it, and all they want is for the pair to stop longing and finally get together. When Y/N finds them having a moment in the bullpen and decides to spy, however, PeggySous might not be the only couple finally having a breakthrough if Jack Thompson has anything to say about it.

I froze in the hallway just outside the SSR bullpen, trying not to make a sound. Peggy stood just ahead of me, leaning against Daniel's desk and talking to him with a radiant smile on her face. He leaned closer to her, and my heart leaped in my chest. These two had been dancing around each other for months, basically since Peggy showed up at the SSR, and now that they were alone in the bullpen it looked like they might finally be taking the move we all wanted them to.
I tucked the file I was holding under my arm, then crouched down behind the nearest filing cabinet. Not the most professional move I'd ever made by a longshot, but sometimes, one friend had no choice but to spy on their two other friends when those two other friends might finally be realizing they had feelings for each other.
I tried to breath as quietly as possible, straining my ears to hear what Peggy and Daniel were saying. I got so distracted, I almost didn't hear the footsteps approaching behind me until it was too late.
"Y/N-"
"Shhhh!"
I whirled around to find a bewildered Jack Thompson staring at me curiously. I'm sure I looked absolutely crazy crouched on the ground in my work attire like I was spying in the field, but I also absolutely didn't care.
"What's going on?" asked Jack, dropping his voice despite his confusion. "Why are we whispering?"
"I'll explain everything, just get down!" I hissed, reaching up to tug on his arm. Jack quickly obliged, dropping into a crouch next to me. We were face to face behind the filing cabinet, and for just a second, it distracted me from Daniel and Peggy. I'd had a bit of a thing for the Chief since I'd started working here, and it had only gotten worse over the past few months as we worked on cases together and got to know each other better.
The pause while I stared at Jack's handsome, questioning face was just starting to creep into uncomfortably awkward when a loud laugh from Peggy shook me out of my daze. Jack tried to stand and peek over the filing cabinet, but I quickly tugged him back down.
"No! We have to stay hidden!" I said.
"Why?"
"Don't you see how close Peggy and Daniel are getting right now? It's been months of the two of them refusing to admit their feelings for each other while the rest of us just have to watch and suffer. This could be the moment they finally have a breakthrough!"
Jack stared at me for a second, then went to peek over the filing cabinet again, this time exercising much more caution. I watched him as he went, and after a few beats, he dropped back down with me, an excited look on his face.
"They're making eyes at each other in the middle of the bullpen," he whispered, a grin on his face. "I've never seen them like this for more than a few seconds before they got scared off."
"I know! That's why I ducked. I didn't want to be the thing that scared them off."
Jack nodded thoughtfully, then looked back at me with a grin.
"You also could've turned around and gone somewhere else in the office if you didn't want to disturb them," he said.
"Yeah, but then I wouldn't be able to spy on my friends."
Jack and I shared a quiet laugh, then as one, we moved up and peeked over the top of the filing cabinet again. We acted as one, like we were reading each other's minds on a mission.
Jack and I got just high enough to see Peggy and Daniel. They were leaning even closer than they had been before, and it looked like they were getting close to a turning point. Jack and I kept watching, and I was trying to prepare to hold back a cheer for whenever one of them finally made a move, when I suddenly noticed the weight of the file under my arm.
It tugged at the fabric of my shirt as it slipped towards the floor. I clamped my elbow down to my side and turned to grab the file better, but I was just a little too slow. A few papers slid out of the file and fluttered to the floor. It wasn't terribly loud, but it made just enough noise to get Peggy and Daniel's attention.
I dropped back down to the floor as fast as I could, Jack right behind me. The filing cabinet we were hiding behind wasn't that big, so we ended up tangled together, me against his chest and his arm around my shoulders. Neither of us spoke for a few beats. The only sound was our hearts beating and our quiet breathing.
Jack and I stared at each other, neither of us moving a muscle as our surroundings slowly fell away. By this point it should've become horribly awkward, but for whatever reason, it didn't feel that way. I completely forgot about everything going on with Daniel and Peggy as my focus shifted to the hazel eyes in front of me.
Neither of us spoke. I tried so hard to keep my focus and not do anything to embarrass myself, but before I could stop myself, I glanced down at Jack's lips.
I felt heat rise to my face in an instant, but when I looked back up to meet the Chief's eyes, I caught him looking at my lips, too.
We made eye contact for half a second before Jack pulled me to him, instantly closing the distance between us. I wasted no time deepening the kiss and leaning into him, and I let the file drop out of my hand and to the floor as I tangled my fingers in his hair.
"Jack..." I breathed, managing to keep my voice quiet as he moved to trail kisses along my cheek and down my neck.
"I've been wanting to do this for so long, sweetheart," he mumbled. I hummed and leaned into him, scratching my nails along the back of his neck. Jack moved back up to my mouth, and I swear I saw stars when we kissed again.
"Ehhem."
Jack and I shot apart like we'd been shocked. We both looked up from where we sat on the floor, now a good few feet away from each other, and found Daniel and Peggy staring down at us with matching grins on their faces.
"Wow. And I thought we were bold, finally setting up a time and place for a date in the middle of the bullpen," joked Daniel.
"We should've known these two would have us beat," said Peggy, looking at Daniel with a fond smile. A grin started forming on my face, until Peggy looked at us and spoke again. "It's about time the two of you stopped dancing around each other, after all."
"WHAT?" yelled Jack ad I at the same time. We stood quickly, glaring at Peggy and Daniel in indignation while they just smirked back at us.
"What the hell are you talking about, Carter?" demanded Jack.
"You and Daniel are the ones who've been dancing around each other!" I cried. "You've been doing it forever! We were hiding behind the filing cabinet in the first place so we didn't interrupt you guys finally admitting feelings for each other!"
"Well, you succeeded in that at least," said Peggy with a smile. She reached over and took Daniel's arm, and they shared a smile before turning back to us. "We're going out later tonight. And quite frankly, the two of you could probably learn a thing or two from our approach."
"No kidding," Daniel jumped in before Jack or I could protest. "I mean, come on. There's gotta be a smoother way to start a relationship than a frantic makeout behind a filing cabinet in the middle of the office."
"Oh yeah?" scoffed Jack as he wrapped one arm around my shoulder. "Y/N, you wanna go out for dinner tonight?"
"I'd love to," I said, turning to him with a grin.
"Great. We'll leave together after we finish up the last few things that need taking care of."
We shared a smile, then Jack leaned over and gave me a kiss. It wasn't too heated, since Peggy and Daniel were still standing right there, but it did last a little longer than it necessarily had to.
When we broke apart, we turned to Peggy and Daniel with shit-eating grins in complete sync. If there were ever any doubt before now about my feelings for Jack, they disappeared in an instant.
"Meanwhile you're over there still nervous to hold hands," he said. Daniel and Peggy huffed and rolled their eyes at us, but I didn't care. Jack grabbed my hand and tugged me back towards the bullpen, and I gave our friends a little wave before following him.
After spending all that time watching Peggy and Daniel dance around each other, all I'd bothered to hope when Jack and I found them was that they would finally get together. What I got was beyond my wildest dreams.
The office was sure in for a surprise tomorrow when they found not one, but two new couples having finally formed.
