Sneak peak to an (hopefully) upcoming one-shot following Yanqing after he wakes up in Ma Feima's body, and then some not very happy revelations ensue.
(sorry in advance for any typos or confusing structures. Haven't reached the beta reading phase yet)

He hisses when the needle penetrates his skin again, thread dragging through tender flesh at a rate that was both too slow and too brash. Largely inconsiderate, even. The pain could almost be confused for a punishment. "So what was it this time." She asks him in a way that doesn't invite an answer. Her attention never slips from her work, fingers seasoned and familiar with her needle and the mangled skin of Ma's back. He wonders how many scars she's tended to, or how often Ma has returned home bloody and bandaged for it to go from a matter of concern to inconvenience. "Another worthy opponent wandering the desert? Some poor band of thugs who bit off more than they could chew? Or perhaps you ran out of money-" the string digs through Yanqing's skin at an awkward angle, making him tense and bite his cheek "-and thought it best to intimidate your way out of debt." None of that, he replies internally. Just a stranger's sword and a body too cumbersome to bear it. Was that really the kind of person Ma was? He guesses the abuse Ma's body has endured invites that presupposition, and yet his mind wanders back to Su Mei, a person he had never met but with whom Ma must have been close with. Su Mei, whose attitude towards Yanqing-- *Ma*, was a stark contrast to the tone of the woman he married; the woman stitching his wounds shut. And despite that, he hesitates to determine whether they were truly close. Not for the lack of context, but for something else. "Nothing to say?" "...I guess I underestimated them." Yanqing shrugs, attempting to bury his awkwardness beneath his uneducated guess of Ma's personality. "No you didn't," Zhaoyu responds with certainty, tying another stitch. "Well, they had it coming," he compensates quickly, keeping his tone low. "I'd probably have been fine, either way." The backside of Zhaoyu's hand comes down upon Yanqing's head, knocking him slightly forward with a strength he didn't know she possessed. "Stupid man," she scolds him. As soon as the offending hand was raised against him, it returns to the tender of his back. "You treat every fight as though it will be your last. I can't help but question if you even enjoy yourself anymore..."
