its always sunny on discovery
“Originally Saru was supposed to have 10 eyes and a triangle shaped head! Writer Bo Yeon Kim did a sketch of how she pictured him”
could y'all have imagined. I mean Doug Jones definitely could have pulled it off, the man is flawless, but still.
I’m officially suffering from ST:Discovery abstinence, please send help
Star Trek: Discovery Analysis And Recap: Season 1, Episodes 1-2
“As visually stunning as this show is, it's missing the one key element that's been essential to every Star Trek incarnation since the beginning: hope. Star Trek has always brought us a hopeful view of the future, that we could overcome our present-day problems through not only technology, but through altruism and generosity and understanding. Even in times of war and conflict, there were hopes of peace. Those are the principles I want to see on display, and I want to see the characters in the show living up to them, not giving into their worst impulses. Sometimes, it takes making the wrong decision in a catastrophic fashion before you learn the lessons you need in order to get it right.”
The first two episodes of Star Trek: Discovery are now behind us, and while I expected it to be darker and more of a continuous story than a series of self-contained episodes, I think this was full of a lot of surprises, not all of them good. Yes, the visuals were absolutely stunning, from the sleek uniforms to the sets to the ships to the Klingons to the battle effects. The binary protoplanetary system was breathtaking. And this was a suspense-filled ride, with plenty of room for growth. But so many elements were missing. Character development was thin and inconsistent; is Michael Burnham a hothead who recklessly acts out whenever she doesn’t get her way, as we’re shown, or is she a cold and logical Vulcan-like person, as we’re told? Does the Federation champion diversity, or uniformity with just the veneer of diversity? And are the Klingons everything that islamophobes fear about Muslims, or are they simply falling for a theocratic demagogue peddling simple answers to complex problems?
There’s a lot to unpack and a lot more yet to come, but find out what my reaction was to the first two episodes of Star Trek: Discovery!
Every new episode of Star Trek Discovery I get caught up in a game of

Quick, non-spoilery thoughts after seeing the first episode of Star Trek: Discovery on live TV:
Pros:
Saru you are my favorite. If you’re telling the truth, the ecology of your planet makes no sense whatsoever, but I still love you.
I’m intrigued to see where they go with Klingon culture in this one, as what we saw was interesting, if a kind of bizarre step design-wise, based on the later TOS movies/TNG and forwards.
New opening sequence is nifty. Doesn’t give me the Feels like Enterprise’s opening did, but also actually has a “Star Trek” sensibility to the music, so wins on that count.
Passed the Bechdel Test within the first 5 minutes, easy.
I hope we see more of the robot head crew member.
Cons:
Between the INSANE amount of commercials (I think there was maybe 35 minutes of actual show in the 1 hour timeslot) and the fact that it was put in a timeslot where it might (and did) start late because of football, I could swear CBS was trying to goad viewers into giving up on watching this on TV and just going online starting with the first episode. (It’s not just me btw. My dad, who actually still watches commercial TV, told me that he would’ve shut it off at the 4th commercial break if he was by himself because it was that frustrating)
Not a fan of the holograms that folks are using to communicate. Firstly, that seems way more advanced than what’s used in other Treks that take place later chronologically. Secondly, Hologram!Sarek was leaning on things in the room which, based on what we could see at the other end, he really shouldn’t have even known were there.
Opening credits say “Guest Starring” Michelle Yeoh, the captain. Looks like she’s not staying around. Bummer.
Somebody please turn on a light. How are you people working in the dark all the time?
Not good or bad just different:
The cinematography is clearly emulating the Reboot movies, with a much more mobile camera, numerous Dutch angles, and the occasional lens flare. My dad (Trekkie since the first airing of TOS) didn’t like it. I’m neutral.
