Star Trek Discovery: Desperate Hours [spoilers]
Burnham was only promoted to First Officer a year before the beginning of Discovery, ahead of Saru, who was promoted to Second Officer at the same time. Their professional rivalry is more poisonous than playful: they exchange barbs in most conversations, though occasionally make an effort to be civil.
Burnham applied for a transfer to the all-Vulcan ship Intrepid, but was rejected.
Georgiou is an expert in the Janeway Tactile StyleTM of being a Captain: Burnham and other crew members receive encouraging shoulder squeezes.
”Even though Burnham was quite possibly the smartest officer Saru had ever met, she seemed to be in constant need of the captain’s attention”
“I wish Michael was here. Only now, in the thick of a fire-fight and bereft of her first officer’s aid, did Georgiou realise just how much she had come to rely upon Burnham’s skill at handling the details of combat.”
“The only one of her officers who kept his focus on his own work was Saru, and the only officer whose opinion Georgiou would actually have cared to know was still trapped inside the Juggernaut.”
Georgiou disobeys orders from Starfleet Command and enters into a standoff with Pike’s Enterprise in order to protect a colony it had declared “expendable”.
Burnham sends an unauthorised message to Spock to end the standoff with the Enterprise, risking court-martial for insubordination. When she says she would do it again under similar circumstances, Georgiou tells her she hopes so.
“…there is no one else I would rather have as my Number One.”
Burnham and Spock had not seen or spoken to one another for years before the events of the novel. Spock refers to her not as a sister, but as “a friend of my family” whom he barely knows, and Burnham had hoped never to see him again.
Burnham is older than Spock, therefore they did not spend much time together when growing up.
“He seemed to embody so effortlessly all that she had so long struggled to become, and it vexed her.” Meanwhile, Spock envies and resents the guidance Sarek gave and the unconditional love Amanda gave to Burnham.
Spock and Burnham mind meld. At first she refuses, out of fear, but her own shame and the thought of Georgiou’s disapproval change her mind.
A katric echo of Sarek joins their mind meld to convince them to trust one another. By the end of the novel, they come to understand one another.
The Burnham family were due to leave Vulcan on a transport, but stayed behind so that Michael could see the Beta Volanis supernova without a viewscreen. Had they left as planned, they would have survived. Michael blames herself for their deaths.
Burnham was dead for three minutes when Amanda begged Sarek to mind meld with her and save her life.
Burnham made her mother (not clear if this refers to her actual mother or Amanda) cut her bangs in the classic Vulcan style in order to fit in with the Vulcan children at the Vulcan Learning Centre. It didn’t work.
Saru is the only Kelpien in Starfleet, and finds most officers project ‘apex-predator’ vibes that make it difficult for him to make friends. However, he gets on well with (and has a small crush on) Pike’s Number One, Una, an Illyrian.
Georgiou has an ex-husband, Nikos.
Aside from live performance, Georgiou’s antique turntable with vinyl records is her favourite way to enjoy music.
The crewmember with the Daft Punk helmet is Ensign Narwani. She’s not a robot - it’s a VR tactical helmet.
