St-Feuillien Grand Cru (Picked up at a Carrefour in Brussels). A 3 of 4. A solid big Belgian pale ale. At 9.5, this drinks much lighter than it would seem, and has a great standard Belgian yeast quality up front with some nice spice and floral notes. Sweet grain notes in the body, and finishes clean.

Missing the Essence of Flanders?

Huh. St. Feuillien Saison, despite being brewed in Belgium, tastes less Belgian than beer brewed by American mega-breweries. It’s a nice beer, don’t get me wrong, but it tastes nothing like I was expecting. Where’s the yeasty tang? Where’s the massive, creamy head? The dominant flavor is bready malt. It’s some great malt – vanilla ice cream and honey. But it’s not Belgian-y. There’s a hint of herbal hoppy bitterness, but that doesn’t save it.

Saison in a Can

It's not everyday you see a saison in a can. It's even less often you see a proper Belgian brewery putting their beautiful beer in aluminum. St. Feuillien has done just that, and the four packs are showing up in all Portland's bottleshops.

The beer is delightfully creamy and balanced. Bright herbs with lemon and white bread -- surrounded by that special je ne sais quoi quality that sets the great beers apart. It's full; it's complete. There is nothing missing and nothing superfluous.
