Like most pastoral societies, felins are constantly faced with the risk of rival clans and tribes trying to raid their livestock. It is normal for shepherds to be armed with their greaves and gauntlets out in the pasturelands.
Maketh, the young leader of his pride, has found himself in a particularly dangerous situation. A rival herdsman has attacked him in broad daylight—a sign of either great desperation or bald-faced aggression. Either way, caution has been thrown to the wind. In such a situation, there are very strict rules of engagement. Maketh relies first on his staff, which all felins carry, to batter and bash his enemy into retreat or submission. If this fails, gauntleted fists and shins are employed to take the enemy to the ground. After giving one final warning to yield, a felin will then employ his claws and go for the kill.
Here, Maketh has engaged the raider in a fierce staff duel, landing a solid shot to the intruder’s jaw and drawing blood. He hopes the raider will flee, and that he doesn’t have more friends waiting just over the hills.
From Saturday’s Dog Bros sparring day with the Bristol Clan, I bring you. Smallridge on Smallridge violence! The last exchange from staff sparring with my brother. He’s an experienced historical fencer but new to stick fighting. This exchange had a lovely dynamic and showed almost every part of the fight, from the entry from snake range to clinch, to Mike’s threat of upkicks and staff hits as I stood from his guard. Fight practice was all slow work intended to help Alex Crompton with great axe. First Yannick and I discussed what Crompie and I did last week, then we tried out different moves and scenarios with different weapons, to see what he'd focus on coaching Crompie on (which meant I also learned stuff.). We figured that working on shots that also provided defensive coverage was best, and where to go from a blocked shot - that the initial thrust should always only be a first move, and be followed by a return to a guard or a further suitable attack that also provided defensive cover, and worked out three particular moves to focus on. And a couple of moves to never do.
So Yannick taught Crompie about those, I occasionally commented. Yannick also gave him some poitners about fighting polearm against polearm rather than just against sword and shield. Then when Yannick went to do footwork stuff with Lesley and Baby Alex, Crompie and I practiced that stuff slowly. While not a rattan great weapon expert, I did find that the fight choreography background meant I could break down the moves into pieces, which I hope aided understanding - and give drills to practice.
As it turned out, some knowledge of Chinese and Japanese spear and staff techiques (and longsword fencing) meant I could suggest a couple of things that Yannick says he'd like to try out as well.
So I guess everybody learned something, though I didn't burn off the ginger bisvuit I had this evening... I'm definitely enjoying doing coaching too, even when it's a subject not in my area of expertise, so to speak.
I am beginning to suspect this is some devious plan of Yannick’s to lure me into a great weapon auth, since I’ve got that perfect-length-for-a-naginata bit of rattan...
Suggestion: Make yourself an Ewok hood and learn staff fighting.
You will look cute af and kick ass.
