Update from Tumblr Staff regarding the new dashboard
EDIT: Updated a/o 7/29/20:
IT’S BACK!!!!!
It looks a bit different from before (as to be expected) but as of yesterday, I have seen URL-specific pagination back on my dashboard!!! I’d seen it pop up infrequently over the past several days so I wanted to be sure there was some semblance of permanence before posting this. The model has been working really successfully within my drafts so I have high hopes for the dash!
As I said it’s a bit different from what it was before. From what I can tell, the URLs are based on the final post on any given page, rather than how far you are from the beginning of your dash. So previously you would’ve noticed the URL said something like “page/2″ with a string of other identifiers. Now it’s showing “max_post_id=“ with again, a bunch of other identifiers.
ANYWAYS!! It’s back and I just wanted to provide an update. Thank you to anyone who contacted support about this. Tumblr staff truly did this because people wrote in. They heard you and they worked hard to bring it back. A good reminder for future issues on this site: the staff does genuinely listen and wants to make your experience here a good one!
Carry on with your previously scheduled scrolling!!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have not been shy about my... disdain for the new dashboard. If you’re like me and have “endless scrolling” toggled off, you have likely experienced a massive disruption in the way you use tumblr. Keyboard shortcuts don’t work and there are no longer url-specific pages.
When you hit next on the dashboard, the url remains as tumblr dot com/dashboard, meaning that if the tab closes or gets accidentally refreshed, all progress is lost. Even more annoying, the reblog window is url specific so by the time you’re done reblogging something, tumblr sends you back to the very beginning of your dash because it just reroutes to tumblr dot com/dashboard. If anyone uses drafts, you’ll notice similar issues there.
I’m not often one to rant on or about this platform because... quite frankly... I’m a veteran at this point. I’ve been here 10 years. I’ve seen a lot of changes. The annoying ones I’ve used xkit to fix or tweak to my liking. Because of the nature of this update, xkit developers have told me that I need to reach out to Tumblr staff specifically as they’re the only ones who can change it. Again, in all my time here, I’ve not bugged staff or offered feedback but finally decided to do so.
TLDR: staff is working on bringing back URL-based pagination!! I’ve had several long emails back and forth with them and I have to give a shoutout for a surprising level of professionalism in the face of my very evident frustration. But they are bringing it back because people have contacted them about it!! If you have issues or concerns about the update, be sure to contact them directly by submitting an actual support request. They’re a bit overwhelmed but they’re reading and responding to all emails they get sent, not the rants that are posted on individual accounts.
Anyways!! Maybe nobody else cares about this but I did see some similar frustrations when I was digging through the “tumblr update” tag so I thought I would provide an update! I’m just happy to know there is a light at the end of this tunnel!!
