$250,000 Triple Impact Gift Supports Neurosurgery Program at Dominican Hospital Foundation
The Dominican Hospital Foundation is the grateful beneficiary of a recent $250,000 cash gift. The gift came from a couple who have benefitted from our Acute Rehabilitation Unit and our therapy program. While wishing to remain anonymous, the donor is a former Foundation board member and a long time supporter of the hospital.
The gift has a triple impact for the donor, the Foundation and the Hospital. For the donors, this gift provides a recognition opportunity for a woman who helped them at a critical time in their lives, and they will be naming a room in the Acute Rehabilitation Center in her honor.
For the Foundation, the funds provide a match for a $500,000 challenge grant from the Monterey Peninsula Foundation. The gift completes the Foundation’s matching gift obligation and allows the funds to be released. The gift also helps to set a new level of giving to the Foundation.
For the hospital, the gift will be used to help purchase an O-Arm imaging system and Stealth Navigation System for neurosurgery. This is a complete multi-dimensional surgical imaging system, used for spine and brain surgeries. The system is utilized to quickly get three dimensional (3D) information on the changing anatomy of the patient during surgery and to confirm placement of implants (screws) before closing the patient. This extra information provides the surgeon with an additional tool that results in enhanced patient outcomes. In addition, The Stealth Station and the 0-Arm support a robust trauma program through improved surgeon visibility for emergent spinal surgeries. The 0-Arm also serves as a mobile CT Scan that will be used on our highest acuity patient that reside in Dominican’s Intensive Care Unit. The patient will be able to receive a low dosage scan at the bedside.
In September of 2011, Dominican Hospital entered a NeuroSurgery partnership with Stanford Hospital and Clinics and has experienced a 9% growth rate in this area with additional growth projected. This is a key service line for the hospital and we are the only hospital in our region providing this level of neurosurgery. Patients recover from neurosurgery in our Acute Rehabiliation Unit ,and the O Arm is part of our Acute Rehabilitation Unit Initiative. This is one of four major initiatives identified by the hospital and the foundation as appropriate for private support.
This triple impact gift is another step in Dominican Hospital Foundation’s strategy to clearly identify needs, focus on obtaining major gifts and, as a result, dramatically improve patient care. We are working ,together, to bring the best possible medical care to our community.
