For the past few days my heart has been heavy, as I know has been the case for the rest of my city, along with the victims and their families and the rest of our country. On the night of September 30th, just a few blocks from my home, there was a hit and run, resulting in the three fatalities of children and one in critical condition. Driving to work the next day, passing by a sea of candles, flowers and stuffed animals, my heart broke into pieces. Processing such a senseless loss seemed impossible to do. Little did I know that later that night I would be listening to a police scanner, fist clutching my chest, hoping that my boyfriend would make it home from work alive. I am still numb. How could a horror of this magnitude be a reality? But my city is strong. My city is brave, it is selfless, it is resilient. This is the time to come together. It is the time to hold those you love close, reach out to those in need and love your neighbor. Now is the time to have discussions, learn from the mistakes made, and step forward with bravery, to do the right thing.
