Some neighbourhood archaeology: Fox Road, Easton. I'm sure I've seen a photo from this spot with a big semaphore gantry in place. The little turret, and the gothic arch underneath, is one of the last remnants of Easton Manor. It was the gothic folly at the bottom of their garden, and predates the railway and most of the surrounding street plan. The site of the manor house itself was on the corner of St Mark's Road and St Mark's Grove; a block of flats named after the manor now stands there. The signal is B235, currently controlled from Bristol box. The post dates to 1970; it was brought into use on October 19th that year. Originally it could display main aspects of R, Y or G with no route indicated (for trains towards Filton), G with a feather (for trains to Avonmouth) or a subsidiary proceed for trains entering Stapleton Road Up Sidings. The sidings were taken out many years ago, but the bracket which supported the subsidiary head is still visible in this picture. The original three-lens head was replaced by a one-lens LED head within the past two or three years; control of the signal is due to be transferred to Thames Valley Signalling Centre some time in the coming months. #bristol #easton #folly #gothic #archaeology #urbanarchaeology #railway #signalling #stapletonroad
