in some ds9 episode there's an offhand mention that bajoran society is a billion years old and everyone just moves on from that statement like it isn't jaw-droppingly insane. anatomically modern humans have existed for about 300,000 years and human civilization (in terms of agriculture, permanent settlements, etc.) is like 12,000 years old? maybe 20,000. and yet bajorans and humans are shown as basically being on an equal stage of technological development (to say nothing of social and political). like even to say bajoran society was a million years old would be a hard to believe stretch, but a billion??? i know i'm being comic book guy about this but that line has embedded itself in my brain and i will never be able to get it out
