Summary: Wei Ying and Lan Zhan bond after meeting Lan Yi, and Lan Zhan keeps Wei Ying from getting expelled when Jin Zixuan insults Jiang Yanli. They're betrothed by the end of lectures at Cloud Recesses.

Multiple marriage alliances among the great clans make Wen Ruohan reconsider indoctrination. His attack on Lotus Pier fails, turned back by a united eastern front, and Jiang rallies around its First Disciple.

This is a series about everything going right: in the novel, donghua, and web series, with occasional manhua references. It includes dragonji, foxxian, adopted and biological babies, and a Yiling Wei sect based on dual cultivation.

My comments: A happy fix-it! Author's voices for wwx and lwj are SPOT ON PERFECTION. So good.  I love their characterizations, which manage to be both consistent and also mature as they boys grow.

I ADORE how Author just threw in everything and the kitchen sink and manages to pull it off so well.  We start with wwx cluing in to the magical forehead ribbon marriage because suddenly the Lan Sect magic is letting him go places he couldn't before... and that wheels, over the next 400k words, into an early marriage, political world-building, relationship growth, ALL KINDS OF FAMILY FEELS including siblings and ALL the parents (and all their mistakes and regrets and not-being-dead).  And.  AND.  Accidental magical events that may or may not spawn babies, shapeshifting powers for many, and reveal intriguing inheritances.  Plus the mild telepathy wangxian share.  Because dual cultivation is a thing they're practically inventing.  Along with cultivating (and managing) resentful energy.  The cultivation world has no idea what's hit them.  But they're fascinated.  (And so am I!)

Whether or not a sufficiently advanced AI can learn to independently think and feel is one of the hallmarks of science fiction, and an existential dilemma that, as far as I’m concerned, has endless avenues of exploration. The show Almost Human missed a lot of opportunities to dig right into the cold, robotic heart of this concept, but in all the places the show itself failed, One of the Crazy Ones by starandrea on AO3 was there to pick up the slack.

Though there are some very conventional elements of relationship fanfiction throughout (hurt/comfort, "forced to share a house," first time tropes) the writing avoids cliché by thoughtfully revisiting the question of whether or not Dorian actually has free will and is able to consent. Can he, as a robot, actually want or enjoy any of these relationship norms that humans love, or is he simply hard-wired to respond positively to them? Are his opinions real opinions or does his complex and deliberately human-like programming simply obligate him to obey his partner under the guise of independent decision-making?
