Apparently Fanfic Authors Appreciation Day was yesterday! 

In lieu of attempting to consolidate my literal hundreds of fic recs into a single post, I’m linking to my fic-rec blog, @starred-fics, which at the moment has 1,177 individual recs in 54 fandoms for more than 70 ships (including gen, het, and slash).

I take tagging quite seriously, so it’s searchable by fandom, author, and ship. And anyone who follows me should know by now that I LOVE sharing great stories, so if you’re looking for something specific, just ask me!

You can also check out @het-reccers, which I moderate with the singularly fantastic @blithers, for awesome het recs in, like, literally every fandom you can think of.

6. Are there writers from other fandoms whom you admire? If so, whom?

There's a reason starred-fics doesn't have a central list of authors to peruse (although you can always go to starred-fics.tumblr.com/tagged/[authorname])—there are way too many people whose work I admire to make a list. If I've recced your thing there, I think you're pretty damn talented. That goes for you, kyrieanne. And you, diaphenia. And stillscape. And so on. 

One of the reasons it took me so many years to start writing my own fic was that it often seemed like there was an incredible talent threshold, even for amateur works, in just about every of my many fandoms. Like every writer does at some point or another, I doubted my place among the true artists. (And still do sometimes.)

All that said, dollsome-does-tumblr, irony-rocks, copperbadge, igrockspock, paperclipbitch, and mhalachai all come to mind as authors I've followed across many, many fandoms purely on the quality of their work.* They're all folks who have a bit of a brand name in my mind as reliably clever, articulate writers with original and interesting ideas, terrific headcanon-accepted characterizations, and great grasps of canon across many different kinds of fic. You can (and should) go find stuff by all of them on starred-fics!

(*That is to say, I don't actually "know" any of those authors to keep up-to-date on their work based on a personal relationship, although there are a couple of mutual follows among them.)

As I explain on the fandoms page, I tag crossovers, fusions, and AUs all with "crossover," as the three types kind of blend into each other. It's not ideal, but it seemed like the simplest way--especially as any AU is sort of technically crossing over with something, whether it's a real-life setting, a set of tropes, or another fandom. 

Does that make sense?

tl;dr...stars-inthe-sky reads a lot of fanfiction, and you don't even know the half of it.

775 posts later, I think I have archived every fanfic I have ever thought was worthy of mentioning to someone else and/or that was good enough that I remembered it myself even without a digital record of it. At least since early 2009. That's more than five years' worth of fic-reading in over two dozen fandoms (and some confusing subsets thereof).

And what's really crazy is that I've been reading fic since early 2001, so there's likely quite a lot of Potterfic I once loved but have since completely forgotten about--as well as fic for Spring Awakening, 10 Things I Hate About You, the Matrix, Moulin Rouge, Smallville, and Lizzie McGuire. And those are just the fandoms I remember dabbling in back in the day. I know there were more.

Anyway, the thirty-posts-at-a-time mass updates of starred-fics are now over, but please please please go comb through the tags/archive and find some new awesome things to enjoy! This was always meant as an archive more than a regularly-updated thing, although I hope to continue adding to it--I have an insanely long AO3 queue, and I assume at least some of what's there is good!

Also, please let me know if there's a way to search for two tags at once, because that would be super-useful (e.g., to see posts that are tagged both "the avengers" and "gen").

Update, for those who care

starred-fics is up to 542 stories in 43+ fandoms! (The plus is for things like Broadway and Shakespeare, which kinda comprise multiple fandoms, and random one-off crossovers, like for Casablanca and Supernatural, which I didn’t bother to list because those stories are more about other fandoms and I haven’t recced anything from these.)

I still have about 500 more emails from the last two years to go through, and I’m still kind of having a ball doing this. It’s a delight to review old conversations with whimzical and prettyanswers and to see at which points people like diaphenia and redrackham87 start popping up, as well as what I read at different points and how I reacted to things.

I've tried to institute a strict don’t-reread-things policy in the interest of time, but I haven’t really adhered to that as well as I could...I'm not that sorry--it’s been too lovely rereading things like that Firefly/Bible fic, or some of the Gaila gen, or the were-pineapple thing that I usually reference when explaining crackfic to people.

And past!me has proven to be remarkably comprehensive—almost everything that’s popped into mind as an “Ooh, I need to remember to get that in” kind of thing is already in the Gmail tag somewhere. Very convenient. Thanks, past!me!

Anyway, more to come on that front, much of it Avengers but much of it also other things. As ever, comments, critiques, suggestions, etc. continue to be welcome. Just please format your submissions and keep enjoying the archive :)

Nope, sorry. Like I said, I'm not trying to replace crack-van here--this is just a massive archive of my recs, and I'm not going to post stuff I haven't personally read and liked. And I'm not going to read stuff for fandoms I'm not in--life's too short, and my AO3 queue is too long!
