Rain drops collided with the concrete pathway outside, a flash of lightning split across the sky, followed by a rolling clap of thunder. You feared thunderstorms mostly because of the sound of thunder. Thunder had always scared you, ever since you were little.
Inside your bedroom, it looked as if a cyclone had torn through the room, leaving a mess in its wake. Clothes were strewn around the space, drawers opened with items pulled from them, as you continued to search for your headphones.
Your headphones were important to you, as they helped to block the sound of thunder out. All you did was put them on, connect to your phone and play your favourite tunes. It helped you to deal with thunderstorms.
Another clap of thunder sounds loudly in your ears making you jolt from the unexpected sound.
You're going to be okay. You reassured yourself, breathing in and out to calm yourself down. You continued searching through old boxes of tech for your headphones. A sinking feeling grew in the pit of your stomach as you came to the realisation that, maybe, they were at The Lair.
You jumped again when another strike of thunder rumbled around you. Picking up your mobile phone, you searched through your contacts until you found Leo's numbers. Clicking on Leo's contact you waited for him to answer. After the third ring, Leo's voice came through the speaker.
"Hey [Y/N], what's up?" he greeted you warmly.
"H-Hi Leo, I was wondering....are my headphones at yours?" you asked, trying to focus on your breathing as you sit down on the couch in your living room. "I can't find them at home, so I was wondering...." you trailed off.
"Let me ask the others if they've seen them." You waited patiently, as Leo walked into the main living area where the rest of his brother's were asking if they had seen your headphones.
"Ooh, I have them! [Y/N] left them the last time they visited, so I've kept them with me." said Mikey as he turned towards Leo from where he sat on the couch, holding up your headphones to show him.
"Yeah, Mikey has them." Leo told you. You replied with a groan in frustration. Just your luck, that the one thing that can calm you down during a thunderstorm, was somewhere else.
Another clap of thunder boomed across the sky, making you shudder and inhale sharply. Leo's eyes raised as he heard you inhale sharply through the speaker.
"Are you okay?" He asked, worrying etching into his tone.
"Y-Yeah," you tried to sound nonchalantly, but the tone of your voice didn't fool Leo. He knew you too well, better than you knew yourself.
"[Y/N]....are you scared of thunderstorms?"
The question caught you off guard for a second, feeling slightly embarrassed about this fear of yours. You hadn't told Leo, Mikey, Raph or Donnie about your fear of thunderstorms. It hadn't really popped up in conversation.
"Y-yeah I am," you admitted. "I, um, usually have my headphones on. They help block out the sound of thunder. That's what scares me the most."
Leo listened intently, making a decision and wandering around the living space, picking up his katanas and your headphones, listening to you rant as a way to calm yourself down.
"[Y/N]," he interrupted your rambling. "I'm coming around to drop your headphones off, give me 15 mins."
You blinked a couple of times taking in what Leo said. "No way Leo, it's pouring out there!" you exclaimed. "You really don't have to do that, you'll get sick. I-I'll be fine!" you tried to reassure Leo, but when you heard another low rumble you squeaked, finalising Leo's decision.
"I'm coming around, I don't mind. If it's for you, I'll happily travel through any storm." Your eyes widened at his honesty, a comfortable silence fell over you both, as you momentarily forgot the storm raging on outside. Your mind focused on Leo's words.
"A-are you really sure?" you mumbled into the microphone of your mobile phone.
"I'm sure [Y/N]. I won't be long."
With that Leo hung up the phone, leaving you stunned. ~ ╍ ~ ╍ ~ ╍ ~ ╍ ~ ╍ ~ ╍ ~
The storm continued on, thunder clapping back and lightning blinding the skies. You waited patiently for Leo, pacing back and forth in your living room. Your heater was on warming up your small apartment and one of your bathroom towels, that you had grabbed for Leo, was draped over the arm of your couch. You felt bad that Leo was taking the time out of his evening to travel in this storm.
Leo always surprised you with how he acted towards you. He showed you ways he cared about you, subtly and awkwardly at times. He wasn't always that cool, calm and collected leader he lead everyone to believe. Because he cared so much about his friends and his family, sometimes it built walls around his heart and soul. Sometimes that made it hard to break through his defences and reach him. But your relationship had grown over the past few years you had known each other. You grounded him whenever he lost sight of himself and his responsibilities, but you also reminded him that he didn't have to have it all figured out. You reminded him it was okay to let go, to enjoy life because it was so fleeting. You cared immensely about Leo like he cared for you. He showed he cared in his own, quiet and awkward way.
A sudden knock breaks you from your thoughts, your eyes flitting over to your window to see a smiling Leo waving with your headphones in his hand. Chuckling to yourself you jumped to your feet heading towards the window, unlocking and opening it up for him to step through.
"One headphone delivery for [Y/N]," he joked as he stood in your living room, headphones in hand. He placed them on your coffee table trying to shake the excess rain off his body. "It's raining cats and dogs!"
"There's a towel on the couch for you," you gestured to the couch before closing and locking the window, drawing your curtains and turning to face Leo. A warm feeling spread across Leo's chest as he reached for the towel, patting himself down. He watched you closely, smiling back at you as you caught his eyes.
Suddenly another clap of thunder booms so loud it sounded as if it had happened in your living room. You jumped away from the window startled by the noise, tripping over your own feet in the process and tumbling into Leo, who raised his arms in time to catch you.
"Whoa, whoa,"
Your heart beat loudly in your ears and you weren't sure if it was the storm outside or the mutant turtle you were fond of, who were responsible.
"T-Thank you!" you stuttered out in embarrassment as he helped you to your feet.
"No worries, I'll always catch you. I promise." You looked up at Leo, finding earnest eyes staring back at you.
"Thank you." You whispered holding onto his arms feeling safe and secure right there, despite the storm outside.
"Shall we watch a movie together?" He suggested releasing his hold on you and heading towards your entertainment unit to browse through your DVD collection. You followed him like a little duck, watching his every movement and inching ever so closely to him.
You settled on a Star Wars film that you loved from when you were a child. As Leo put the film on, you microwaved some popcorn and grabbed two soft-drink cans. Leo turned off your overhead lights, opting for keeping your floor lamp and some other small lights on so that you weren't too scared of the lightning outside.
You both sat down on the couch comfortably with some space between you both. He watched you as you settled into your couch, one of your many throw blankets dropped over both of your legs.
"Here," he whispered bringing you closer to him so that you were touching. For a moment you froze as he easily slide you closer to him. You were shocked by his actions, because for the most part Leo wasn't as smooth as this, but the sudden reminder of the storm outside snapped you out of your temporary frozen position. Leo had draped an arm comfortably around your shoulders, bringing you gently into his side and after a moment you allowed yourself to settle comfortably in his side.
"T-thanks Leo," you muttered to him as you focused your attention on the movie playing. You wondered if Leo could hear the way your heart accelerated every time he was around. The way the world seemed to brighten whenever he was around you. He was always a source of comfort and safety for you, and you were so grateful he was there in your apartment.
The thunderstorm didn't seem so intimidating after all.
Not when Leo was by your side.

Note: Fun-fact, I'm scared of thunderstorms - thunder in particular really scares me, so because I don't have a cute Mutant Turtle by the name of Leonardo around to comfort me, I put my headphones on and blast my music. It helps to drown the sound out.
