When a Spell Goes Wrong…

Hello all! I took an un-announced two week hiatus due to some personal struggles. I won’t be getting into specifics here, but I would like to muse on the trials and tribulations of returning to my spell work after so long. In short, sometimes, things don’t go quite as planned.
So, a spell backfired…?
Not necessarily. I don’t really believe spells can backfire in the way some others might. Say you do a spell to bring more money into your life. Then, you get hit by a car and get a massive insurance payout. But, you’ve now got the trauma of being hit by a car. This is a pretty extreme example of what I believe would be called “a monkey’s paw”, I guess. However, I don’t think this is how witchcraft really works.
I do think that sometimes our wishes and spells can be fulfilled in unexpected ways. But, unless you are willing more turmoil into your life, I wouldn’t ever classify spell work as this dangerous. I’m having difficulty elaborating more on what I mean by all this right now as I’m still struggling a bit with what’s going on in my life, but perhaps I’ll elaborate on this further in another post. Essentially, I don’t believe in the three-fold law or ascribe to what most might consider karma.
No, I don’t think you are going to ruin your life with one dud of a spell because you didn’t “do enough research” first. More than likely the only consequence of a newbie’s spell being poorly devised would be that it just simply won’t work.
Where am I going with this? Mostly, I wanted to muse on what even should be considered a failure in regards to spell work. Is it a failure if simply nothing happens? Or, does something detrimental have to occur for it to be a failure?
The Spells and The Situation
I did two spells to aid my fiancé in getting a job he really wanted. I did have his permission to do them, and he even participated so as to imbue his own magical energy into the work. These two spells were pretty draining for me and took a bit of time and preparation. I’m not going to share them in this post just because obviously they didn’t go quite to plan and still need some tweaking. I will say, one spell was meant for attracting a job opportunity and the other was for confidence during the interview.
For the first spell, it actually did go completely right. He applied for the job, I performed the spell, and he got the interview! Simple as that, but I later in this post want to elaborate on my thoughts concerning what is mundane versus what is magical.
The second spell also worked according to my fiancé. He said he felt more confident, but he still didn’t land the job. Let’s talk about what happened.
It Doesn’t Always Work Out
Now, writing all this out, it’s obvious that both spells did do what they were supposed to do, right? Technically yes. I don’t think those spells failed. However, a negative outcome was still what we got. He didn’t get the job.
Personally, I think that’s an important lesson all witches must learn eventually. You can perform a spell successfully and still not get what you want. This is why the preparation and research portion of spell crafting is even more important than the performance of the spell itself, in my opinion. Neither spell itself guaranteed landing the job, and this was kind of half-intentional/maybe-unintentional on my part. This may have been an oversight for me, but I also intentionally avoided manifesting such a goal.
Why? Mostly because I am still unsure of myself. Returning to witchcraft has been an exciting journey, but a scary one at the same time. Spells manifesting big outcomes or life changes can deplete even a veteran witch’s energy severely. So, I did what I thought was possible for me.
Mundane vs. Magic
If I had manifested an outcome more focused on the attainment of the job, would it have worked? Who knows! That’s one of the most exciting parts of witchcraft. Discerning where your witchcraft is affecting your life is its own magical game of i-Spy. But, it can be disappointing or even infuriating when these magical changes can’t be found or were never placed to begin with.
That’s another thing I wanted to touch on before I end this post. Where does the mundane end and the magic begin? I believe, like two separate pigments of watercolor, the magic bleeds into the mundane. It blends in with it to create a brand new color, and that is the outcome of your spell work. It is the future you manifested. You might get a beautiful shade of paint or you might get a muddy mess.
Where to Now?
What do you do with your muddy mess? Well, that’s for you to decide if this may be something you yourself are dealing with. For me, I think it confirmed that my magic is still there, but I am extremely rusty in my spell work.
And, that’s one reason for my hiatus. I’ve had my nose in every book I can just researching my craft. Other issues have been plaguing me that I do not wish to discuss. But, for now, the plan is to keep working and researching, even if I’m not documenting everything online. I am still going to put daily tarot readings on pause. I’ve mostly been working on astrology and sigils.
