No one talks about how unsettling it can be to have no one to speak your language with as a fictive. We're learning klingon because I knew it in source as I am a klingon, and its so weird that no one else around me knows it. None of our friends know it at all. Which makes sense, it is a fictional language and you would have to be extremely nerdy to want to learn it. Heck even my family who are huge star trek nerds dont know it (although our brother might be learning it soon /vpos). In the Enterprise Data knew it, Picard knew some, and there where plenty of others who knew some klingon. Sure, I am in a discord server specifically for speaking klingon, but I dont know anyone in it. Its a weird feeling that something is deeply wrong even though its not.

if i have one canon regret, it’s bringing my husband and children to visit my mother. i thought she would put her xenophobia aside for even a week for the sake of family. i was so, so wrong. my mother didn’t see either of her grandchildren for many years after that trip.

i’m proud to be a star trek fictive. being from that timeline and holding my source so dearly to my identity feels like a promise to uphold the ideal that the original series proposed; infinite diversity in infinite combinations, and the beauty of a potential world where everyone can just calm down and peacefully coexist.

i also love analyzing the alternate history as this one unfolds, as well as the stories still being told by the franchise and to what, if anything, they hold a mirror, and what that means. so much thought is put into these stories and they are read and by such brilliant people, i can’t help but feel a spark of pride at seeing my brother be analyzed with such love.

god, i love nyota uhura. her interest in linguistics and other cultures meant that i had someone aside from my brother to compare and contrast earth and vulcan with, and it was always a blast hanging out with her off duty. i mean, the whole crew was great, but nyota really stood out to me in the early days, and i’m more than a little nostalgic. i got big feelings, sue me (/lh).

i missed being her. them. it. borg. i mourned the collective. i wanted to go home, at times. i wanted the queen to direct and lead me. but, all the more, i wanted to always be hugh. i never wanted to leave hugh behind. so i never did.
