Post Plato’s Stepchildren, Spock is unable to lock his emotions away. He can’t meditate, he can’t regain that Vulcan control. He does his best to hide his struggles behind a stoic facade.

Bones and Jim never met at the Academy. Instead, Jim Kirk was a stowaway aboard the Enterprise, having failed the entry exam but too stubborn to let himself be left behind. Bones is the one that finds him, sneaking into Sickbay after hurting himself (probably running away from security or crawling into someplace he had no business being).
Jim Kirk picks up little local trinkets from the planets they visit, as reminders, and as gifts. Each trinket is given to a member of the crew - Bones, Spock, Sulu, Chekov, Nyota, Scotty, Janice, Chapel, etc.
After a little while, the crew starts gifting back. Even Spock.
