The Hirsebreifahrt [millet gruel trip] is a historical river journey between the cities of Zurich and Strasbourg. The cause of the journey was a festival between the two cities, where the people from Zurich claimed to be so fast, that they could transport a pot full of millet gruel from Zurich to Strasbourg without it getting cold. In 1456, a ship with millet gruel reached Strasbourg within 22 hours, the gruel was still warm enough to be distributed among the many people that expected the men on the ship. The pot in which the gruel was transported was then left in the arsenal of Strasbourg.
120 years later, the journey was repeated, this time it was the goal to reach Strasbourg so fast, that the gruel was hot enough to burn the peoples mouth.
In 1946 it was decided that the journey should take place every 10 years, but it is now impossible to reach Strasbourg in such a short time as many floodgates and other barriers are blocking the way
Recipe for millet gruel
Ingredients: 200g millet water 7dl milk sugar or honey 100g raisins each 50g hazelnuts and walnuts dried fruits
Put the millet in a bowl and cover it with water. Cook on small heat and more water as the millet takes up a lot of water. When the grains are all soft, add milk and sugar or honey and then the other ingredients. If it is to thick, you can add more milk. The millet gruel can both be eaten hot or cold, depending on your preferences
