It starts off slow before it picks up speed. Much like everything else in Rick’s life, his romance with Daryl is a roller coaster ride Rick isn’t quite prepared for.—-The taste of iron is on Rick’s tongue when he shoves it bitterly down Daryl’s throat. It’s not a pleasant kiss, not one for the romance enthusiast. It’s raw and nasty, animalistic almost. Their teeth clash, and their body’s bruised. The bitter pain in his chest, won’t subside but something breaks there. Rick feels the anger continue to boil, harsh words wanting to fall from his busy tongue. Daryl had been stupid, too careless and it had almost cost Rick something irreplaceable. Rick isn’t sure when he finally pulls back, if the fist balled into his shirt is there to push him or keep him in place. Rick is out of breath, but his words don’t stop with the steam. “You don’t get to pull that stupid shit again. “ Rick growls out, the bitterness still on his tongue. Whatever this is, it won’t be mentioned– but it’s a start.—-It was Rick’s turn to be careless. His life was worth nothing in his own eyes, all too willing to push it aside for his people. When the fence had fallen he didn’t think twice, jumping in pushing the dead away. It was stupid, but it needed to be done. Minutes later when the dust settled and help was found– it was Daryl’s turn to yell. Ranting to Rick about his stupidity, hands yanking at his skin. Looking for the bite mark that Daryl was sure was there. Rick may have been covered in blood, shirt torn, but he wasn’t bit. He may have been stupid but he wasn’t idiotic. Rick hadn’t thought about their previous kisses, stolen and never spoke of. But here Daryl was going off, and Rick couldn’t help but think he wanted to kiss the man. So, he did. Daryl had all but sputtered. Leaving Rick with a sore jaw and Daryl storming off like a bat out of hell. Rick rubbed at his face. The grin that was forming there didn’t fall an inch.—It was the way Judith babbled to Daryl, like some sort of shared secret that had Rick’s stomach in butterflies. Or maybe it was the way that his daughter’s face lit up in those moments that lit a fire in Rick’s chest. It would warm his heart and remove the chill from his bones. He’s leaning against a door frame watching the scene play out, when Rick gets the urge to kiss Daryl. It’s different than before, different from the hidden moments before. Rick is no thrill seeker, and he can only image how the other man would take the action. And, yet Rick can’t help the smile that forms on his face. He wants to shake it off but he finds it hard to. Daryl shoots Rick an odd look, and Rick only shrugs.
Daryl’s attention isn’t kept on Rick long, not when Judith is persuading the man instead. It’s in that moment when Daryl is letting out a low chuckle in tune with Judith’s giggles that cause Rick’s feet to move. He wants to join the moment. He leans on the back of the sofa, Daryl trying to hand Rick his daughter. Rick waves him off, cooing to the child instead over Daryl’s shoulder. A few minutes pass like this, the feeling is comfortable. Rick’s chest feels warm, like a missing piece fell back into place. It’s then that he leans over, kissing Daryl’s temple. He’s startled the other far more than Rick startled himself. Daryl’s cheeks end up red.The hard smack to Rick’s stomach, and Daryl’s nasty grumbling don’t sour Rick’s mood. It’s moments like this, that are so brief that really make the former sheriff all too warm.—It was the lopsided grin, Daryl sheepishly throws over his shoulder that does Rick in. It’s what causes Rick to move all too quickly heading to where Daryl is standing. He opens his mouth to start a sentence that doesn’t come. Instead he is met with a kiss. It’s not perfect and it’s rushed. Their lips aren’t even properly seated but it meant far more than any of their other kisses. That Rick knows. Daryl mumbles out a quick good night, before he heads off. Rick’s head is spinning, and he’s the one now giving the lopsided grin.
Somewhere along the way the tables are turned on Rick. It’s sort of funny when Rick thinks about it, he supposes. Rick really isn’t sure how he really feels about the situation but it’s easy to see the kisses that are now shared between the two so quickly and with hast aren’t only on Rick’s mind. He wasn’t sure at first. Rick always wondered if in the brief moments that they shared– most brought on by a heated argument, were only Rick’s doing. Maybe they were just pent up frustration that the two shared? Rick isn’t all too sure. But, it seemed that it wasn’t as one sided as Rick thought. —It wasn’t a surprise when they ended up in bed together. Rick had fumbled, but so too had Daryl. It was as awkward as it should have been in all the right ways. He is more surprised that they keep ending up there. He is even more surprised when he realizes that he doesn’t mind sharing his sheets with the greasy man he calls his best friend.
The kisses in the aftermath are really what make Rick’s knees weak. When they are both so close to dozing off, their breaths something fierce but the kisses still as sweet. Nothing, however, is better than the kisses he gets to leave in the morning. When he is sure Daryl is still too dead to the world to know what’s going on. Rick wants to lay there kissing him awake but knows the man far too well to do so. Maybe Rick’s just a sap? A nasty romantic in the wrong time. So Rick settles, something quick to not wake the other man. Daryl’s temple, his shoulder, his cheek– before he removes himself from the bed.—Their kisses were far too many now, needing more than their hands to keep count. Their stolen moments hidden, like a secret too precious to share. Rick doesn’t mind it, he doesn’t mind how things shift comfortably between them from there on out. The good night kisses soon morph into good morning kisses, that soon morph to every kiss in between. It’s easier now, it feel less like a challenge and more like this was meant to be something.
Rick isn’t sure what “something’’ is but, it is cherished nonetheless. Somewhere along the lines of their finely laid brotherhood, formed a romance that he was far more comfortable with. It was the small touches, or lingering hands that often did Rick in. It was the looks, that conveyed so much emotion between the two– it was the way they spoke. Their sentences in unison even when they weren’t around. Rick wasn’t sure when the kisses truly morphed into something more and he isn’t entirely sure when the line was finally blurred. Rick feels happy again, for the first time in a long time, Rick feels at peace.

“daryl, i promise you i’m FINE !!” a little weak maybe, but there was surely something she could do. maybe look after the baby, or she could cook for the group. simple things like that would be fine, right ?? “you don’t have to fuss over me, i’m okay. i’m ALIVE.”

A FRESHNESS IS IN THE AIR, and somehow the sunshine seems a little more embracing. Hope fills his pores as everything winds down. They can all finally breathe again. Of course, there are a few hiccups lining the horizon, but they can work those out. For now the war is OVER and they can move past this. Paul will figure how to calm Maggie in due time and hopefully talk her down from that ledge of vengeance she’s clinging far too tightly to. As he gazes over at the archer, a small smile adorns his lips. “i assure you , the sun will shine on us again .”
Dirt and grime covering her, Beth looked around their little group carefully, biting her lower lip as she inched her way into a standing position, making sure not to wake anyone up accidentally. A soft breath escapes from her as Beth is successful and without thought, she begins making her way towards Daryl keeping watch, butterflies coursing through her stomach as she frowns lightly. She doesn’t plan on talking, knows he wouldn’t talk to her if she tried talkin’ to him anyways, so when she finally makes it to his side, she sits carefully, watching the walkers from afar and just -- thinking. She had been unable to sleep, eyes open and staring at the stars above her. It all seemed normal and she knew that that as a thought she could no longer have in a world like this. And with everyone as comfortable as they could be outside, getting as much sleep as they could have before tomorrow’s move in into the prison - Beth couldn’t do any of that. She had too many thoughts. A low sigh escapes, her knees coming up and resting under her chin as she watches the patches in front of her, skimming with a few stray walkers, taking pleasure in the real silence. / @stcmpass old starter that i promised.
