for the umpteenth time, rue was in a bar. this time, it was a bit more lowkey: she was recognized immediately, but just small enough that no one felt rude enough to approach her & intrude on her personal space. the plan was to go outside, go to an actual studio, force herself out of the five year slump she'd been stuck in. with braylen & the visions, she should've had plenty of material. instead, she's six shitty drinks in — working on the seventh — and vision free. rue didn't have to look away from the moscato glass in her grip or tap into her fuzzy second sight to know that she'd been found. "didn't know you were in town."

disbelief rocks her foundation, allows for worry to rush past & flood her tone — along with another twinge of something. let this have been just a few years earlier and lourdes would be looking at what she knows to be braylen’s younger brother sideways, feeling deeply troubled & disturbed by the sudden confession, wondering why he’s choosing to relay this information to her specifically.

now, lourdes knows exactly the reason why. even if marquis doesn’t say it — even if she doesn’t say it — she knows. and once she begins to process that fact, the rest of his confession comes easy to her heart. marquis was a doberman, lourdes a santino & a still revered asset of the oversacce-knights. they don’t fucking do this.

but marquis is choosing to give her this confession, this out of character display of vulnerability, and it takes a fucking lot out of lourdes not to press marquis into her chest & hold him. 

“...okay.” she chooses to speak softly instead. even her face is soft — the subtle frown lines around her mouth disappear along with the crease between her eyebrows, and she lets her open palm settle against her knee. an invitation to hold, if he wanted to take it. lourdes won’t make him. “okay. we gon’ figure it out, a’ight? you can talk to me ‘bout it or don’t, but i’ll help if you want me to. somos buenas?”

she wasn't used to doing this. — frankly, she didn't think that she would ever be.

it's usually her on the receiving end of this spectrum, since the very beginning. they both had been heavy feelers, the depth of their emotions at times feeling as if it had been bigger than either of their bodies could carry; but she was always the more expressive one. it bled into her actions. it bled into her career. it bled into her lyrics & her songs. it bled into her drinking.

which is why being sober had been the first unusual thing that rue noticed. she hadn't been sober like this for a while, but with braylen, she would. hell, she hadn't even answered calls in a while — but for braylen, she does.

the second unusual thing is that braylen called first. the pendulum dynamic remained since their reunion, but rue had taken it upon herself to be the one to reach out first from now on. braylen didn't want to overextend herself to disappointment like that anymore, and rue understood.

but the final, most unusual thing of all. it's braylen's head against her shoulder. braylen's tears wetting her neck. unusual, but rue's reaction had been natural. she wraps her arms around them, holds braylen against her breast, and sets the open journal in between the both of their laps: final page up. nothing but silence between them momentarily, after rue concludes reading the last words inked against the worn pages.

short answer? yes :)

long answer — and i can't find the meme it came from for the life of me, omfg — is that at sixteen years old, she shot & killed one of the rival gang members responsible for the drive-by shooting leading to her brother ramone's death. this was on insistence of her father, alonzo, and carried out literally four hours before she had to wake up for school the same morning. she doesn't really talk about it.

she's also seriously wounded, and maybe even killed, many people after she was formally jumped into her family's gang & enlisted as a drug runner / narcotics cook. whether from beating bitches uses her fists or stabbing / shooting at anyone deemed an opposition, lourdes got tf down. same goes for when she was under contract for another crime family in her early twenties. i don't think she talks about these days either, 'cause #depression.

now? i don't think she goes out of her way to hurt anybody, and she definitely doesn't enjoy talking about how much blood is really on her hands at the end of the day from her past life. even when her father had an on sight order on her & she was getting regular beatings or attacks from her old gang acquaintances, she didn't really fight back until she had to. but if a bitch pisses her off or anybody she's close with? yeah...chubby cherub reminding everybody that she's lonzo's daughter fr.

addendum: she killed someone in her final girl verse but this also doesn't count cause they literally gutted her first & killed all her friends and her brother & ruined her life forever?????

her family's after signing a contract to cook for another, much larger crime family of literal strangers — especially alonzo's. his hurt is expressed often through anger, hence exiling her from the family and turning a blind eye to his recruits assaulting her regularly up until about two and a half years ago. no, he's still not talking to his youngest daughter.

gianni's, aka her former boss & the heir of aforementioned crime family. technically. i mean, they kinda sorta weren't dating and weren't supposed to be involved with each other in the professional sense in the first place, but things were very complicated & she eventually ghosted him both romantically and professionally. which...very shitty to do to a leader of a crime family.

maybe a couple of her old exes & situationships? but those have been very few and far in the past these days! she living her best life rn, in her soft good girl era & shit. lourdes is only as trustworthy as you are, so half the time she ever broke an exes trust, she was only getting her get back & doing him worse. that doesn't count.

she'd just done it for the very first time the other night, and already, braylen was hooked. not like lourdes could blame her for it, though — she'd been told that her hands were heavenly. she'd been a fan favorite, mostly for other things, but definitely for washing someone's hair.

"you lucky physical touch my fuckin' love language. now c'mere," lourdes ushers her over with rolled eyes, patting her inked thigh for braylen to lay down against. as soon as she felt her weight, lourdes immediately set her nails to work; scratching & rubbing at her scalp.

for some reason, the sentiment hadn't been one that she's expecting to hear out of marquis; but the random, disjointed way that it happens fills her up with a deep gratitude nonetheless. in hindsight, she should've expected something to come out of it. they were perched on the stoop, eating her leftover gorditas straight from the container — she makes too many to feed just herself, because she always does — and passing a lavender-laced blunt back & forth as the sun peeked somewhere around the corner. and no one was trying to kill her. no one was trying to kill him. what could've been safer than that? "where? like...here?" it leaves lourdes a little stupefied — curious to know when their roles started reversing. "you safe wit' me?"

they weren’t in south florida anymore, talking circles to each other in the presence of crossed & bibles in her uncle’s living room. but he damn sure made it known to lourdes that she remembered what he said.

it was always a surprise when braylen comes up — even moreso when marquis joins along for once — and in loving fashion, lourdes introduces them to every facet of her home & her life. as a block party stretches its’ afternoon hours into dusk, marquis settles into her like a bodyguard without asking. when a couple of dudes make their best efforts at grabbing her attention, lourdes made her lack of interest clear well enough on her own. when the same dudes keep trying, thoroughly upsetting her peace, that’s when he bites.

and like he told her all those years ago, he doesn’t let go.

“you gon’ get us fuckin’ arrested one day — you know that?” when she finally pulls him off the pavement (grateful that the neighborhood coco helado stand had seen everything, even letting her borrow ice cups to rub against his knuckles with), she’s more surprised that it’s not braylen who she’s scolding. “i could’ve took ‘em by myself, you know. i’m not bitch made.”
