Page 01. ---- No Still, But Cackles From Disused Well Result in Finding Fifteen Fowl - Four Arrests and Prison Terms ---- (Special Despacth to The Globe.) Campbellford, Feb. 24. - Police hunted moonshiners and found chicken thieves today. Excise enforcement officers heard reports of a still being operated on a small farm east of Campbellford, and they raided the place this afternoon. They discovered no still, but heard cackles from a disused well, which had been covered carefully with logs. They removed the logs and found fifteen chickens at the bottom of the well. Chief Brownley of Campbellford and Provincial Officer McBrien were notified, and identified the chickens as those stolen recently from Miss Mary Hill’s farm. Subsequently, the officers arrested Walter Parcels, Ray Martin and Angus and Manson Lindsay, Magistrate Floyd held a Police Court session at once, heard Parcels and Martin plead guilty and sentenced them to two years’ imprisonment. The Lindsays elected trial by Judge. Chicken stealing has been going on extensively in this district lately, and plenty of poultry farmers have been sitting up all night with their shotguns across their knees. Police believe they have rounded up the whole gang.
