You know what gets me about fan artists??????

That when it comes to authentic photography of actual people being captured doing their funky thriving in real time - the sheer scale of captured humans in action, in all their subtle and lurid glory, it!!! makes!!! sense!!!

those stories-within-a-story-esque backgrounds where each person - even the ones, especially the ones in the background - looks like the main character of their own story complete with a rich, lived in backstory and colorful characterization.

And it makes sense!!! Bc u are taking a photo of actual, living breathing (hopefully, tho not always) humans in their natural habitat, in an organic way. OF COURSE!! It makes sense that there is more to the photograph than what first draws the eye, the hidden details and hints to a larger worldview. Bc!!! Humans are a complex adaptive system, where the behavior of the whole cannot be predicted by summing the behavior of the individual parts.

But then... u look at art that specifically fan artists make - usually for fiction, usually not based on any frame of reference or models

And??! It is mind bogging how the more I look at art, the more details I find that adds a whole new layer of meaning or humor or feelings to it. The more I look, the more real it feels. And then I remember - oh. This isn't based on a real frame of reference, this captured spontaneity that reeks of human chaos wasn't actually organically generated through human folly and hubris (at least not the folly and hubris of the characters in the art)

That, every little bit of detail, every clenched fist mostly hidden away, every slightly smudged eyeshadow, every!!! Single!!! Brush stroke that makes up the humanity of that piece was planned and orchestrated by someone who created this from nothing other than love for the characters.

Truth can be stranger than fiction, especially if your imagination isn't very good. But that doesn't mean truth is necessarily more /human/ than fiction.

Just... Thank you, fan artists for creating the world that you do. For putting that visual pun in that 90% of people wont explicitly notice but still subconsciously appreciate in a gestaltian way.

Page 05. ---- Two Years Term is Given For Chicken Thefts To Essex Man --- Pals Get Mercy --- Suspended Sentence For 2 - ‘Old War Habit’ Alibi Is Discounted --- James Kennedy, 35, of Essex, a veteran of the First Canadian Division, was sentenced by Magistrate W. A. Smith in Sandwich police court this morning to serve two years in Kingston Penitentiary on charges of stealing chickens from two Essex County coops.

PALS GIVE MERCY Kennedy along with Wallace Fairburn, 20, and Edward Wlesh, 27, of Essex, were charged with stealing 20 chickens from John Baldwin, of Essex, and 12 chickens from Ira Cowell, also of that town. They pleaded guilty Monday and appeared for sentence today.

As Fairburn and Welsh were merely tools of Kennedy’s they were given two years suspended sentence each, on their personal bond of $500, on the more serious charge and were fined $10 and costs each on the lesser count. Chief Paerson of Essex, laid these charges.

Major James H. Clark, counsel for Kennedy, explained to Magistrate Smith that his client was wounded three times while serving in France with the Fourth Battalion, in which unit his two brothers were serving when killed in action.

OLD WAR CUSTOM Major Clark claimed that Kennedy’s war experiences had something to do with his fall from grace. He added that Kennedy, accustomed to stealing chickens during his army days, had come to look upon that offence as something trivial.

The lawyer’s explanation might have had some effect if Crown Attorney James S. Allan had not produced Kennedy’s record, which showed that he served two jail terms for theft in 1911 in Hamilton.

‘I think it’s very necessary to protect the farmer who is trying to make some kind of living raising chickens, from having his yards cleared out,’ said Magistrate Smith in imposing sentence. ‘Something must be done, if possible, to prevent chicken stealing, which is become such a chronic crime in the County of Esssex.’

Kennedy, Fairburn, and Welsh are also to face trial in county court on another chicken stealing charge. The date for this trial has not been set.

“The stiffest penalty yet imposed on an Essex County chicken thief was given Matthew Kenna, 32, of Rochester Township in Sandwich police court Monday morning, when he was sentenced to serve four years in Kingston Penitentiary for thefts from seven farmers. John McKeegan, 21, also of Rochester, was given two years less a day determinate in the Ontario reformatory, and two years less a day indeterminate, for the same thefts. He was given the two-year terms for each offense, the sentences to run concurrently. Kenna also drew two-year terms for each theft, but two of the sentences are to run concurrently, making four years in all. The terms for the other five thefts are to run concurrently. Page 19. ---- Cobourg, May 13. - (Special.) - Walter Parcels and Ray Martin were taken to Portsmouth Penitentiary today, where they will serve terms imposed upon them by Judge Huyeke of three years and two years, respectively, the former for alleged chicken theft and perjury and the latter for chicken theft.

“Chicken Thieves Caught in Hunt For Moonshiners,” Toronto Globe. February 25, 1931. Page 01. ---- No Still, But Cackles From Disused Well Result in Finding Fifteen Fowl - Four Arrests and Prison Terms ---- (Special Despacth to The Globe.) Campbellford, Feb. 24. - Police hunted moonshiners and found chicken thieves today. Excise enforcement officers heard reports of a still being operated on a small farm east of Campbellford, and they raided the place this afternoon. They discovered no still, but heard cackles from a disused well, which had been covered carefully with logs. They removed the logs and found fifteen chickens at the bottom of the well. Chief Brownley of Campbellford and Provincial Officer McBrien were notified, and identified the chickens as those stolen recently from Miss Mary Hill’s farm. Subsequently, the officers arrested Walter Parcels, Ray Martin and Angus and Manson Lindsay, Magistrate Floyd held a Police Court session at once, heard Parcels and Martin plead guilty and sentenced them to two years’ imprisonment. The Lindsays elected trial by Judge. Chicken stealing has been going on extensively in this district lately, and plenty of poultry farmers have been sitting up all night with their shotguns across their knees. Police believe they have rounded up the whole gang.

Page 19. ---- Guelph, April 17. - (Special.) - Pleading guilty to having in his possession burglar tools, stealing chickens, and forgery, Leonard White was sentenced to three years in Portsmouth Penitentiary by Magistrate Watt today. White was arrested by Detective P. Hauck a week ago, when he was suspected of being the owner of a gunny sack and crowbar found outside a chicken coop.
