“Great. A few hours into the new team, and I’d already convinced them that Steelslayer was adorably strange,” (David, Firefight by Brandon Sanderson)
“You can't be so frightened of what might happen that you are unwilling to act.”
- Steelslayer AKA David Charleston

FIREFIGHT
"You realize Phaedrus will turn on you. You've hired the lion to protect you from the wolves, but either will be happy to eat you once the food runs out."
How to ask a girl out
David: So, uh, want to go with me to check up on Obliteration? If you're not doing anything else important, I mean.
Megan: Did you just invite me out on a date... to spy on a deadly Epic planning to destroy the city?
David: Well, I don't have a lot of experience with dating, but I've always heard you're supposed to pick something you know the girl will enjoy...
Megan: Well, let's get to it then.
Firefight; Brandon Sanderson
If all the second books in trilogies were in a contest, Brandon Sanderson's Firefight would win. In the same world of Epics (humans who were granted superpowers and all turned evil) rule city-states and Reckoners (Epic-killing rebels) re-established a human city of Newcago, David continues to maintain the peace. Let me say I love the premise of this book. Absolute power corrupts absolutely in a post-apocalyptic America, and the humans are fighting back. You add a fabulous main narrative to that world and you have this series. David is perceived as a Steelslayer who killed the most powerful Epic and is a forced to be reckoned with. Many people would call him masculine and intimidating until they meet him and realize he is a nerdy goofball who uses his zeal to inspire others to fight back. Not exactly the almighty Steelslayer (especially with his metaphor/ simile problems). He was brilliant as always, seeing things people refused to acknowledge and inspiring others to change their environment and way of living. He found the connection between weaknesses, powers, and fears that I never saw coming. Through the book, I loved the parts with Megan or Firefight. She is so kick-butt and adorable and she likes David and they are adorable. He just keeps on trying to convince Megan and those around her that she is a good person who can is a hero. She lived up to David's expectations through the book. She stopped using her reality shifting powers, didn't betray them, and ultimately saved the City. She's the best potato ever. Because of Megan, David re-examined the way reckoners kill rather than reform and even began to feel guilt over killing the people behind the powers. It was much-needed character development. Now, let's get to proof. We learned a lot about the people in his past and his plans to be a good Epic. His connection to the city where they were hunting was crazy. In Firefight, he was secretive and moody. Using his powers more and more until he destroyed himself. It was really sad to watch, and then he blamed David's optimism for it and I died a little. All in all great book. I liked the new reckoners, city, and Epics. The book felt like its own thing, Often in trilogies, you get three of the same book with changes in setting. Sanderson did a fabulous job with this science-fiction YA and I can't wait to continue reading.
