Update on Creary.net

A few months ago I wrote about how I was invited to be part of Creary.net, a new art site that pays you for likes with a new cryptocurrency called CREA.  The people behind this appear to be very smart and have taken many intelligent steps to try to make this successful.  Here is a report on my experience so far.

Initial excitement

Initially it is exciting.  You post your work, you get likes and it shows up as money right in your post.  Just like below.  You think:  When can I buy something with my money?

Reality sets In

You have to wait a certain number of days before you can cash out your earnings.

Once the waiting period is over you need to convert your CBD to CREA.  CBD are the units of the CREA cryptocurrency you initially get that are equivalent to dollars.  You have to do this through the internal exchange they have, and it took a few tries before I understood it.  It is all for a good reason, but not intuitive to a motion designer who has never traded stock or currency.

Then you need to transfer your CREA to Exrates, which is the cryptocurrency exchange that supports CREA,  This takes a bit of learning to do as well.

Once your CREA is in Exrates you have to exchange it for something you can use in the real world to buy things.  No one accepts CREA for purchase.  First you have to wait until you have enough to even try to exchange your CREA, which is about 30 USD.  Once I had enough I tried to exchange for USD but that has many restrictions and I am not sure I can even do that from the US.

I next tried Bitcoin and created a sell order,  Then you wait.  You have to hope that someone comes along and buys your CREA for Bitcoin at the price you designated.  I have no idea if that will ever happen.  

This is not a scam, it is bleeding edge 

The people at Creary,net are very supportive and are working hard to make this a real thing.  I think they are doing everything right.  They just need a lot of people to join the platform (at this point they have around 15,000) and stay with it until CREA becomes a supported currency that you can actually use in the real world. Or rather exchange the CREA for something you can use in the real world.

Will that ever happen?  I have no idea.  But another Crypto site, Steemit has a similar model (although it is more text based, like Reddit) and apparently people are actually making money there.  The problem is that Steemit is not a browsable visual art site like Creary,net.  It is text heavy and ugly.

Creary is doing something different in that is aimed directly at visual designers, illustrators, animators.  I will go back and keep posting on Creary.net but I have no illusions that I will be getting any real money anytime soon.  But who knows?
