Carmen sat down on a fallen tree staring out at the lake. “This seat taken?” She glanced up not getting a full look of his face. She shook her head. “Everything alright?” “Look I said you can sit here, doesn’t mean I want to talk to you about my troubles.” He blinked looking at her a bit shocked. “Well didn’t know Carmen was this bitchy.” She turned her head to him. “What do you want Stefen?” Stefen smiled then shrugged moving closer to her. “I’ve waited years to talk to you, to do the things we used to do together. What I wanted to know is why you left me alone.”
She stood up and crossed her arms turning to him. “You want to know why I left? Because I was told that if I talked to you again you’d end up dead. I did it for you. I ended up alone too, Stefen. Not just you. Frankly I don’t want to do those little kid things with you. Grow up and move on.” his heart sank and he looked up at her. It was obvious she wasn’t the same girl he was used to. She was nice and caring, this Carmen was rude and cold hearted. She sighed taking her hood down, “look. I shouldn’t even be talking to you now.”
Stefen stood up, carmen now standing in front of him. He looked down at her, his finger tips gently tracing her jawline. “Then why are you talking to me?” She pushed him away gently narrowing her eyes, “for one because you showed up here. For two because.. I don’t know. Mostly the first reason.” Stefen chuckled shaking his head. “You’re telling me you haven’t missed me?” “I have missed you. but--” he moved closer wrapping his arms around her waist. Carmen tried to move away but he pulled her in closer. “Stefen please. Just let me go.” She set her hand on his chest and tried to push away but his arms only got tighter around her. She looked up at him glaring slightly. “I’ve missed you, terribly. I know now that what we had.. it wasn’t just a friendship. It was a bond. A close one. I loved you then, I love you now, I’ll love you always.” He whispered leaning down for a kiss.
Panic set in and carmen kneed him the closest place she could. She pulled away and hit him good in the eye. “I don’t love you! I love Avery!” she stumbled back, tripping and falling onto her bottom then quickly got up. “Carmen please!” He reached for her hand but she pulled it away before bolting up the hill near by. He sighed kicking the tree. “Great, just great. Why’d I even try?”
Her heart was racing and for some reason she was crying. She stopped close to the house trying to collect herself again. Carmen wiped her eyes on the back of her jacket sleeves. Her hands were shaking, which wasn’t any surprise to her. Sitting down she leaned against the tree. The house was in view and she was sure Avery would be able to see her from his bedroom window. She pulled her knees up to her chest hugging them as she closed her eyes. She pictured herself at the beach, to calm herself before she went back in.
Stefen reached the top of the hill, seeing her by the house. He made his way towards her and kneeled down. “Carmen, please..” His hand softly set on her knee. She jumped lifting her head. “Get away from me Stefen. We’re close enough that if I screamed Avery will come running.” She smacked his hand off of her knee and slowly moved up. He followed her up keeping his arms on either side of her. Carmen turned her head away staring over at the house. “Get away from me Stefen before I do something I’ll regret.” “I figured out you’d hurt me anyway. What happened to you? You were sweet, you were caring, you were so much fun.” She bit her tongue closing her eyes again. She felt like she was going to puke. Her eyes opened, she went to scream but his hand came over her mouth. “I’m not harming you, you have no reason to scream. I just want to talk anyway. I miss my friend. You know, the one who lied to me about her name and all. I get that you love him,” he nudged his head towards the house, “but he doesn’t seem to like you very much since he seems so scare to get close to you. Let me make you happy. I’m better than him.”
Her laughing was muffled by his hand. She reached up grabbing his wrist and twisting it pulling it from her face. “One, I’m not your friend anymore. Two, I lied for a reason. I wasn’t planning on keeping you around long anyway.” She lied. She didn’t tell him because she didn’t want him to look for her if she ever left. Carmen bent his wrist back bringing him to his knees. She looked down at him, smirking.
Avery took a double take out his window surprised at what he was seeing. A little girl like Carmen having a man on his knees crying out in pain. He had to admit it was one of the things he admired about her. One of the reasons he even stuck around Jared’s house. He wasn’t sure if he should leave the house or not, what if Jesse needed him? He kept still, staring out the window at the scene. She was right though, she wasn’t as innocent as everyone put her out to be.
“Three, when I let you go you’re going to get up and run. You’re going to keep running even if it’s hard for you to breathe. Why? Because I don’t want to see your face around here anymore. Got it? and Last but not least. You, no, no one is better than Avery. Not a single guy could make me feel the way he makes me feel. Sure he’s a bit of an ass and yes sometimes I’d like to tear my hair out and even though he knows many girls that are far better looking than I am he hasn’t dumped me on the side of the road. He makes me happy, he treats me right. He doesn’t make me sick to my stomach when he goes to kiss me and when he corners me I’m not frightened. Not like I was with you. Finally, if you ever and I mean ever put Avery down like that again. I will hurt you. Not like I am now, no. You will not be able to leave the hospital for months. That’s how bad I will hurt you. Got it? ..nod.” Stefen nodded, everytime she put emphasis on somethign she bent his hand back more. He let out little yelps here and there but he wasn’t able to hold back the tears.
Finally Carmen let him go. Just like she had said he got up and ran off. He hadn’t felt so low since the day she left. Even then he wasn’t able to hold back the tears. She had made it clear that his Carmen was no longer around. She was long gone and he hadn’t understood why. He kept running, the pain in his chest soon dying away. He felt nothing anymore. Not event he pain in his wrist. He was finally giving up.
She turned walking towards the house. Event he walk hadn’t helped her. Carmen shook the thoughts away then walked through the door. Avery walked out into the hall, his arms crossed. She took off her jacket putting it up on the coat rack then turned to him. He looked at her with a raised brow. Carmen just walked over to him pulling him into a deep, passionate kiss. When she pulled back she winked at him then walked past him and into his room. By now Avery was completely confused on what Carmen and Stefen had talked about. She hadn’t kissed him like that since the first time they kissed but even then it was nothing like that. He furrowed his brow then turned walking back into his room.
