A genuinely great game for the 32X, Shadow Squadron (Stellar Assault in Japan) is a space combat title that later received a sequel for the Saturn called Stellar Assault SS. A much better alternative to Star Wars Arcade and a must buy if you have a 32X
Sega Megazone #53, July 95 - Review of ‘Stellar Assault’ on the Sega 32x.
Vault video today Stellar Assault / Shadow Squadron is one of the best games on the 32X an arcade space shooter much like Sega’s own Star Wars arcade. It still doesn’t get much love on the internet but deserved to be discussed a lot more, it’s sequel on the Sega Saturn was even more impressive. This is our full playthrough in the two player ship.
there's a new post up at the world's greatest obscure videogames review blog, and to close out 2024, it's another 32x game! go and read about it~!
and please show your support by reblogging this post and maybe also subscribing on patreon for early access to new posts, more screenshots of the games i cover, and exclusive bonus posts! in fact, though this is the last public post of 2024, there's at least one more thing to come to the patreon :D
DAY 1497) Stellar Assault (Shadow Squadron) - Mission 2
Composer: Teruhiko Nakagawa
I have had this on my backlog of things to post since day 1 of this blog and for some reason never posted it until now. I wonder how many other things in my currently ~350 track long list of things to eventually post have been there since day 1 for all these years...
(0:00 - 0:26) 16 bars of 12/8
(0:26 - 0:37) 7 bars of 5/4, 1 bar of 12/8
(0:37 - 0:58) [5/4, 12/8, 5/4, 5/4]x3, 5/4, 12/8, 7/4
(0:58 - 1:09) 7 bars of 4/4
(1:09 - 1:18) 4 bars of 5/4
(1:18 - 1:24) 4 bars of 4/4
(1:24 - 1:27) 2 bars of 5/4
[loop from :26]
Some tempo changes but I don’t feel like writing them in.
There’s some weird ambiguity with the first two 4/4 bars of 1:18, and I wanted to write it out differently but it’s so ambiguous and it adds up to 8 quarter note beats so I just wrote it out that way.
Lots of triplets here too, where every layer is aligned with the triplets and none to the 16ths, this makes some of these simple looking bars a bit jumpier sounding than it looks on paper.
I suppose you could write the 12/8 at the start as triplets in 4/4 too, but it’s day/month 12/8 time day so that is not how I am writing it!!!
With Sega 32X emulation still being rubbish at the best of time it's time to do a trueplay playthrough / longplay on the real deal. Captured directly from the Japanese release this is Stellar Assault or Shadow Squadron if you live in the USA. A free flying space simulator with an arcade feel, for many Sega fans one of the highlights of the Sega 32X, certainly this and Darxide are must haves for the system if you're a shooter fan. The game features two ships to choose from and both play very differently, this playthrough is with Feather 2 the large gunboat ship in two players one person is the pilot the other the gunner. Feather 2 doesn't get an energy refill after every mission so you have to balance your use out over the course of the campaign. It does however have a stronger gun shot that can destroy capital ship fire, there is also a heavy torpedo attack but as it drains shield and energy we didn't use it, damage it does is also pretty weak. Attacking capital ships weak points is the fastest way to take them down, so aim for the command deck and wing sections. A great game for fans of the genre or arcade style shooters like StarBlade. With only six missions you can easily finish the game in an hour and this is one title you want a six button controller for. Note the Japanese version, uses a different default colour scheme for the enemies to the western version, however you can adjust this in the option menu, the game also runs in quite a small window. A part sequel part remake was released on the Sega Saturn as Stellar Assault SS. The Japanese company Artmic also did the ship design.
