‘Heya buddy,’ Donghyuck grins as Hyunsuk toddles towards him as quickly as he can, jumping into his arms.
Unlike your son, you walk normally towards the door to meet your boyfriend.
‘And hi beautiful,’ he wraps you in a hug, kissing your cheek gently.
‘Hi Hyuckie.’
Donghyuck had come into your life when Hyunsuk was only nine months old. Hyunsuk’s dad, Baekhyun had broken up with you once he’d found out about your pregnancy. You’d grown and raised Hyunsuk all on your own until you met Donghyuck working in a cafe.
He’d completely swept you off your feet, and you had become serious very quickly. You remember wondering when it would be the right time to casually mention that you did in fact have a child, but once you had, you felt a huge sense of relief wash over you.
‘You have a son?’ His eyes had widened slightly, but he managed to swallow another forkful of chicken.
‘Yeah… he’s ten months.’
‘What’s his name?’
‘Hyunsuk.’
‘You must’ve had such a hard time… being on your own.’
‘It was ok. I… I would really love for you to meet him one day, if that’s something you would want.’
‘I’d love to.’
Now nearly two years on, Donghyuck and Hyunsuk were incredibly close. When they had first met, Donghyuck was clearly petrified, but quickly took to him and his cuteness, instantly becoming a father figure for him.
You would never try to force Donghyuck to be that to him - worried that maybe the pressure or the responsibility may push him away, so Hyunsuk would always refer to Donghyuck as just that, or ‘Hyuckie.’ When he wasn’t with you, he would often ask where Hyuck was, when the next time he would see him would be, what he was doing and if he would be there to tuck him in at night.
Tonight, Donghyuck was having a ‘sleepover’ (as Hyunsuk would call it) at your house.
‘Hyunsuk, you know you shouldn’t leave the dinner table without asking,’ you half scold him.
’Sorry mummy/mommy.’
‘Oh, are you in the middle of dinner?’ Donghyuck asks, and you nod, ‘yeah he just ran off when he heard you open the door.’
‘Well, little man, I think you’ve got some chicken nuggets getting cold you need to go back to,’ Donghyuck picks him up, grinning at Hyunsuk’s melodic giggles as he raced through the hallway.
You follow, sitting back down at the table and watching as Donghyuck encouraged Hyunsuk to finish off his peas.
‘I don’t wanna eat the peas,’ he pouts, trying to shove away his plastic Mickey Mouse spoon.
Donghyuck sighs quietly, mulling over the little one’s words before quickly coming up with a solution, ‘how about… if you eat all of your peas, we can watch some TV before you go to bed, if that’s okay with your mummy/mommy.’
He looks at you, his facial expression showing you that he was worried whether or not you’d approve.
‘That’s fine with me,’ you smile, much to the apparent relief of Hyuck.
‘Come on then,’ Donghyuck gathers a bunch of peas on the spoon, holding it in front of Hyunsuk’s face.
Hyunsuk happily swallows the peas, buzzing at the thought of being allowed to watch some TV before bed.
A few spoonfuls later and his plate is completely cleared of food.
‘Alright, lets get you ready for bed,’ you get up, scooping Hyunsuk in your arms and walking out of the room.
‘But mummy/mommy, Hyuckie promised me we could watch TV-‘
‘And you can, but you need to get washed and in your pyjamas first!’
You hear Donghyuck clearing away plates downstairs while you give Hyunsuk his bath. Eventually the clattering comes to a stop, meaning he’s probably finished loading the dishwasher.
Once Hyunsuk was fully washed and in his pyjamas, the two of you trudged into the living room, where Donghyuck was sitting on the couch, scrolling on his phone.
‘Hyuckie,’ Hyunsuk whines, holding his arms out to Donghyuck.
‘Do you want a cuddle?’ Donghyuck asks the sleepy toddler, who nods tiredly.
You let Donghyuck take Hyunsuk from you, smiling fondly at the way Hyunsuk settles into Donghyuck’s chest, staring at the blank TV screen.
‘What do you want to watch?’ You ask him.
‘Paw Patrol,’ he mutters.
‘Of course,’ you laugh, not surprised at your son’s choice.
You cuddle into Donghyuck’s side, resting your head on his shoulder and wrapping your arm around him and Hyunsuk as the episode begins.
Hyunsuk manages to last about an episode and a half before beginning to nod off, Donghyuck rubbing his back slowly.
You both watch in silence as his eyes eventually flutter shut, quiet breathing evening out into light snores.
‘Thank you for getting him to eat,’ you mumble, and Donghyuck tilts his head to give you a kiss on the forehead.
‘It was nothing.’
‘You’re so good with him… and I’m really grateful that you always try and help me out, even though he isn’t your responsibility.’
‘Hey, you told me all that time ago that you’re a packaged deal. I’ll look after him as long as I’ll look after you. I love him that much.’
‘You know… you’re the only real male figure in his life… you’re like a dad to him, Hyuck.’
‘Honestly… I’ve never really said this because I’ve never felt as though it was my place to say but, sometimes I wish he was my son.’
‘He is.’
Donghyuck seems taken aback.
‘He asks a lot about who his ‘daddy’ is’ you put the word in quotation marks, ‘and I never really know what to say. Once he asked me if you were his daddy and I didn’t know how comfortable you’d be with that label.’
‘It scares me a little…’ Donghyuck murmurs truthfully, running his fingers through Hyunsuk’s wispy curls, ‘but I’m telling you right now that I’ll be here for him- and you- as long as you’ll have me.’
There’s a couple of moments silence before a particularly loud snore reminds you that Hyunsuk is still asleep on Donghyuck.
‘Let’s carry him to bed, okay?’
You remove yourself from Donghyuck’s side, before walking up the stairs with him into Hyunsuk’s bedroom.
Donghyuck carefully lowers Hyunsuk into bed, covering him with his red bed covers.
‘Daddy?’ Hyunsuk lisps.
‘Goodnight, Hyunnie,’ Donghyuck whispers back, kissing him on the cheek.
He turns on his gold starry nightlight, glancing up at the projected stars that littered the ceiling. You say your goodnights before joining Donghyuck in the doorway, carefully pulling the bedroom door shut with a click.
