Lorem Ipsum vs Real Content

Lorem ipsum gets a bad rap. Yet it can be a useful resource for your designs. So when is it the right time to use lorem ipsum in place of real content?

Stephen Hay says that using filler text only works if you know the shape of your content. Do you have a headline, a paragraph, and then a long list of bullets? Great. You know the structure of your content, so go ahead and use placeholder text.

But if you use a placeholder and don't know what your content looks like, that's where you can get into trouble. If you have real content, use it. Don't hold up the design process if you're waiting on content.

One Deliverable or Many?

Have you ever presented a final design to client all at once? What kind of reaction did you receive? If you didn’t get a positive reaction it might be that they felt overwhelmed.

When you present a final design to a client, there’s a lot for them to take in and comprehend. There are so many factors that influence their decisions about the design.

Instead of doing a “big reveal,” take your client through baby steps. Share deliverables with them often and show them the process. You don’t even need formal deliverables, just something to show results. This ensures you stay on the right track and makes your client feel secure.

Designing in Text: Structured Content and Design
