CCTV FREESPACE - Stephen Hurrel and Andy Kennedy
In an ironic attempt to entice a creative 2-way dialogue with a wider world, artist and local Govanhill resident Stephen Hurrel concocts a 'free-space' in the back lanes of one of Glasgows most complex and interesting areas. This is Govanhill; but is anybody watching and does anybody really care?
Govanhill welcomes over 25 nationalities and has become home to some of the newest immigrants, asylum seekers and migrant European workers entering the country. It's a culturally rich but tough area, and crime and poverty are statistically off the chart. Made as a part of the Streetland festival which helps to interpret difference and uncertainty by bringing a range of local happenings, exhibitions, performances and film screenings to the area. Ultimately reclaiming the streets and providing a focus for discussion, local debate and change.
This film was shot, edited and presented in just 36 hours during the festival and featured in the public screening in Westmoreland Public park on 2nd May 2010. Many thanks to all those who took part in the making of this project and who turned out to participate in the range of events at Streetland 2010.
