This is just as enjoyable as the first volume. Bringing back Celia, Dimitri and Bonnie was done well. Bonnie's role isn't huge only enough to know she is still in Victoria and Sparky's lives and doing well for herself. It introduces 3 new characters Mei-Li a word smith, her familiar a red panda called Pan Hong and a military Lieutenant Alastair. This volume revolves around Victoria and Mei-Li entering a word smith competition, becoming friends and travelling by airship back to Mei-Li's native Eastern Nations. While this continues the power of words theme that is overarching to the series it adds bravery to mix. "Fear is the essence of bravery. You are brave not because you are strong. You are brave when you in spite of fear". It shows bravery in multiple situations, all different and all at least a little realistic, something that young people may find themselves in.

Race remains a non-issue, Mei-Li and Demitri are clearly from a very different place geographically to Victoria but it is never really bought up. Though there is that joy of sharing what makes you, you or your culture if that makes sense. Dedelis and Freeman do a wonderful job of distinguishing and transitioning between settings. From the town to the Eastern Nations and from the tea party to the airship. The Eastern Nations are cliche a little but I don't think I have too much of an issue with that, it is done well with beautiful colours and designs. Stephen Kok's script is effective it tells the story well and in suitable language, the linguistics for the different characters are distinct as well as is only right. Frustratingly this does finish on a cliffhanger but I guess it is logical, the first concluded the second leaves you wanting more. I am looking forward to seeing where Kok, Dedelis and Freeman go from here. And the story of the man in black (because of course he is).

I like this. I like the characters and the plot. Sparky is a fun companion, lover of sweet things and hater of bullies, also he's a dragon so there's that. Celia is super cute. Boris and Dimitri have a complicated relationship that is shown fairly well. And Victoria well, Victoria is enjoyable. I related to her. There is something relatable about that simple mistake and feeling the need to fix it. The plot is as simple as people trying to right their wrongs, Victoria's recent one and Dimiriti's past one. All wrapped up in a steampunk setting with the message of the power of words. The final lines in the story are sort of the message of the whole thing "Sticks and stones may break my bones. But worst can never hurt me. Words can be so much worse. Words have an unseen power to them. The wrong word at the wrong time can destroy, while the right word at the right time can change the world.". The art on this page is lovely, with words and their associations shown is different colours.

The art is nice. It's coloured well. For something that is in a steampunk setting, there is a variety of places visited in Word Smith. The scenes in the Misty Forest are lovely, there is a sharp but pleasant contrast between them and the town/ workshop scenes. Dedelis and Freeman do a great job of bringing the characters to life. Eric Gravel's illustration of Victoria on the last page is in a slightly different style to the rest of the book. It's just as effective and I quite like his take on Sparky. This is a bizarre size for this book. The frames have a 2cm white border around them, it's a lot of white space and I don't know why but it's really distracting.
