Prompt: Near and Gevanni freezing their butts off walking home in the snow then drinking hot chocolate and cuddling

Summary: Near takes Gevanni outside for a snowball fight. When he refuses, they go back in to warm up.

Authors Note/s: It's a little different from the prompt, but I tried too keep it similar. Happy (late) Holidays!

Blizzards were never fun, being snowed in and unable to move around freely. It was a pain, and Near did not have the time to deal with it. Unfortunately, the rest of the SPK insisted on waiting out the storm so no one would get injured, or frostbite, or anything of the sort. Waiting so long only made Near aggravated, as patience isn’t something he has quite the abundance of. Snow could only last so long, but if it lasted any longer, Near would make the rest of his comrades shovel out enough room so that he could leave.

Lucky for the SPK, the blizzard ended before that plan would have to arise. Near was still angry that they lost so much time when they could have been investigating the Kira case further, but was glad that the period of snow was over. There were many things he wanted to do, and a few of them weren’t related to the case at all. Some traditions he learned at Wammy’s die hard, and he wouldn’t miss them for the world.

Before leaving to the outside world, Near assigned everyone to their different jobs, and made sure everyone was doing it right. Then, Near called upon Gevanni, asking him to accompany him on a small outing. Of course, Gevanni complied, all considering Near is his boss.

Gevanni helped Near put on some of his warmest clothes, persisting of a couple holiday sweaters, a large jacket, a fluffy hat, a scarf, and gloves. He wore something similar to Near, in different colors and obviously sizes. Near complained that the multitude of clothes was too uncomfortable, but had to bear with it for the sake of not freezing his ass off.

Near told Gevanni they would be going out to buy some things that they were running low on- more legos, some action figures, maybe some more dice. As they left the building, however, Near picked up a chunk of snow and threw it right at Gevanni. Needless to say, the brunet was very surprised. It wasn’t normal behavior for Near, and disregarding that, he’d never thought anyone in the SPK would throw snow at him.

“What’s the matter, Gevanni?” The white haired boy questioned, sending a flat but curious look up to the taller man. “Haven’t you ever felt a snowball before? It’s traditional for many people to throw snow at others during this time of year.” A small yet sly smile crossed Near’s face, sending a challenging look up to Gevanni.

“Near… We have work to do, you know? I thought we had important jobs to finish.” Gevanni looked down at his boss, wiping the snow off his face and clothes. Near scowled at him and stood, wiping his clothes off as well.

“Alright, it seems even you don't think we have time for this. It's still freezing outside, so we better go back in." Near held a small frown but he made his way inside with Gevanni. Once back in, Gevanni helped Near undress until he was only wearing one fluffy sweater and a pair of warm pajama pants and socks. Gevanni wore similar.

Though they were indoors again, they were both very cold from their short time outside. Polar vortexes can do that to you, huh?

"Gevanni, make some hot chocolate. Marshmallows and whip cream, too. One for you and one for me." Commanding Gevanni to this small job, the white haired boy took a seat on a couch, watching different footage of Kira worshiping networks. Disgusting. Every single one of these damned idiots.

Eyes trained on the videos, Near patiently waited for his second best to return. A few minutes passed, and Gevanni entered the room with two hot cups of hot chocolate, a pleased smile gracing his face.

"Did you put-"

"Yes, one big marshmallow cut into four pieces," the brunet laughed, taking it over to Near. "I still don't understand what's wrong with four small marshmallows."

"They don't have the same flavor. The big ones are better." Near took the cup, blowing at the top with the steam for a few seconds. He seemed to ponder something for a moment before speaking again. "Sit with me, Gevanni. Take a few minutes. Relax a bit."

That was odd, Gevanni thought, but complied, taking a seat next to Near.

"Tell me, Gevanni, who would you suspect out of these people? Go ahead, take your time."

Gevanni frowned, looking from screen to screen. He couldn't observe them all at once like Near, and didn't have a definite suspect. Not even a clue.

"I don't know. I'm not like you, Near."

"I know. I simply wanted a bit of insight, a second opinion."

For a few more minutes, there was silence as the two drank their hot chocolate. About five more minutes and they both were done, the cups deposited neatly on a table close by. Near requested Gevanni to sit with him a while longer, since working alone could be rather, well, lonely. At least from time to time.

“I’m still cold,” Near stated flatly, looking up to the older male.

“I can turn the heat up.”

“No.” As soon as Near replied, he scooted closer to Gevanni, curling up by his side. “I want you to stay with me.”

Gevanni thought it was strange for Near to request something like that, but didn’t want to go against his boss. Honestly, it was interesting to see another side of Near. Cute, maybe. The brunet put his arm around the white haired boy’s shoulders, holding him closer.

“Like this?”

“Exactly, now be quiet. I’m watching the footage.”

The older male chuckled shortly, trying to watch the footage as well. It was still too much for him to take in, and it wasn’t exactly his area of expertise either. While Near watched, Gevanni traced little patterns on his arm, idly thinking of other things to do. Get prepared to trail someone at any moment.

Gevanni was ready to take his leave when he heard a light snoring from his side. Looking down, it appeared Near had fallen asleep in Gevanni’s arms. That… that really was cute. He couldn’t bring himself to leave Near alone on the couch. He settled back against the couch and closed his eyes, allowing himself to drift asleep, just like his tired boss. Maybe the cold wasn’t too bad, after all.

he is the REAL PROTAGONIST OF DEATH NOTE. not but tbh does anybody but me and summer even have an opinion on aiber? he is just not the most popular guy which would make sense except i'm P SURE HE HAD MORE SCREENTIME THAN MATT SO EXPLAIN THAT ONE TO ME

Of all the questions Stephen had foreseen being asked at his yearly performance review - and practiced answering in the mirror as he’d hurriedly knotted and re-knotted his tie, aiming for those perfect sharp edges - this had not numbered among them.

He falters, hand twitching against his lukewarm coffee cup, which had cooled on the waiting room side-table while Near had kept him in suspense for half an hour after their scheduled appointment was meant to have begun.

He says, forcing himself to sit up straighter, “I don’t see how that has anything to do with my job.”

"I disagree completely," Near says, fiddling with his Rubik’s Cube as Optimus Prime watches on stoically from his perch on the copy machine. "Why do you think I hired you?"

Stephen frowns. He doesn’t want to be asked that question. He doesn’t like the implication that he’d sought placement in the SPK, or any team that Near has assembled since the start of their acquaintance, out of some misguided romantic perusal of a sheltered 17-year-old boy. Stephen is not like that, and even now that Near has grown into his own body - limbs long and even, shoulders broad, jaw jutting sharply, absent of any of the remaining baby-fat of his late teens; he even gets stubble, sometimes, papery and pale as it is, and Halle always rolls her eyes when Stephen comes out with his sleeves rolled up after having helped him shave.

But still, the idea that he intended any of this makes him uncomfortable.

"Oh, I don’t know," he says, catching the lilt of annoyance in his throat, even though he knows Near would barely pay it any mind were he to let it free. "The fact that I graduated at the top of my class? My linguistics degree? My hours of exemplary fieldwork and my letter of recommendation from - "

"No, no, that’s not it," Near murmurs, eyes trained on the ceiling. He’s finished his Rubik’s Cube and moved onto another, lining it up with the rest in the neatly filed rows of faded technicolor. "Washington is full of men with letters of recommendation from every source with the qualifications to make them. Men from good military families with plenty of degrees and a strong belief in justice. Men exactly like you in every material way."

Stephen can’t quite keep himself from snapping, when he asks, “Then why didn’t you hire any of them instead?”

As if it might as well be anyone who cooks for him, who strains over his forgeries for days, who holds onto his sleeve in public places, keeping him close in the rough muddle of the daylight crowds. Any man with a degree sitting by his bed on the nights when he decides to sleep, reading the Greek myths and stoically bearing every correction of pronunciation. Any recommended little soldier who could clench his jaw, feeling the scrabble of hands on his back, warm breath in his ear; lightness and the glow-warm scent of clean skin, of laughter, pure and unexpected after the first time they’d fucked.

As if Near might have said anyone’s name when he’d leant over, curling a finger perfunctorily through his hair, and mumbled, ”Gevanni, I’ve decided that I like sex.”

He isn’t given the reply he fears, however. He isn’t given any proper reply.

"You haven’t yet answered my question," is all Near says, then repeats the words like they’re easy, like they’re no different than any others: "Do you love me?"

He could refuse to answer. He could lie. He could scrabble to hold onto his pride, giving away nothing, and having nothing taken. But then, he thinks, that’s what all the men like him from Washington would do, and rolls his eyes. “Yes, you complete - ugh. Yes.” 

Near tilts his head. “Good.”

Stephen - slightly warmed, slightly impressed with himself, and more than a little annoyed with Near - supposes that, appropriate forum for it or not, this probably isn’t the best time to ask for a 10% raise.

So he goes, ignoring Halle’s grin and appreciating Anthony’s pointed cluelessness, and waits while the rest of the team goes through their reviews, flipping through the unbearably dull law volumes piled next to Nears bed.

It’s only hours later, after he’s toed off his shoes at Near’s arrival, climbing more fully onto the bed - and, pathetically, more or less awaiting instructions - that he asks the question again. The room is warm with sweat and quietness and Near has solved two cases and settled on a solution for one international banking dispute between his orgasm and now, floating through hazy brilliance in the post-sex dim as he always does.

"Why did you hire me? Really?” Stephen says, leaning over on one shoulder, mussing his hair against the pillows.

He’s not sure whether Near is answering his question, or just making a fully unrelated statement, when he replies, without a glance to Stephen at all, “You’ve very handsome. I like the mole below your ribcage.”

He grins slightly, however, thin mouth curved up. And to Stephen, it’s as good an answer as any. He grins back.

can we talk about aiber and L okay i'm in an aiberxL mood. like how did they meet?? because i'm really feeling the idea that aiber was trying to con L because he thought he was some troubled street youth with a rich grandpa but then surprise he's actually a millionaire and a genius and then they have sex probably.

i love you summer because (among many other reasons) you're one of the only other people i know who EVEN GETS AIBERXL MOODS (like what is that? i'm starting up a ban. BAN AGAINST NOT SHIPPING AIBERXL. EVERYONE ELSE IS BANNED)

no but i love this because i've never actually thought of that, i just always assumed he was part of one of L's cases. like, there was a crime syndicate or some kind of white-collar multi-billion dollar whatever shit going down in like paris or something and aiber was mixed up in it and L was like "well this guy looks like the weak link i better go for him." and he uh went for him. and aiber was like "WHATEVER I'M SO OVER THIS WHOLE DEAL ANYWAY I'LL SELL THEM OUT TO GET ME SOME OF THAT PASTY ASS" etc etc

but TROUBLES STREET YOUTH i'm thinking of that one fic on the kink meme where L pretends to be a hooker just for curiosity's sake GODDAMMIT I LOVE L LAWLIET. fuck l lawliet
