Stereo-types fall short...
I find the stereo-types and misconceptions that people carry around with them about other cultures and religions absolutely hilarious. I don't blame people for having them, because they do exist, but I do blame them for their own ignorance. It really doesn't upset me, so much as it does frustrate me. I don't assume that every Christian spends there Sunday's in church, or that anyone that smokes from a young age has bad parents.
I'm a black afro-arab muslim. So the strereo-types that are placed on me are endless. Every-day I face one. "So do you have to wear a head-scarf when you go out with your parents?" , "You're black so why don't you like chicken?" (not a joke- really I get that). "I don't understand why you're black and speak arabic, I thought arabs were white?". Believe me people, these are not exajarations, but the true extent of ignorance in the world.
So I'll answer some of those questions now:
Not all muslim parents force there daughters to wear a head-scarf.
I don't like chicken because I think its to bland beyond the skin.
I'm black and speak Arabic because I am an Afro-Arab. In other words, my ancestors are a mix of black Africans and Arabs that migrated to Africa, that have created my people. I am Sudanese, and Arabic is the predominant language in my country.
I'm happy to answer genuine questions, because we're not born knowing everything, but I just wish people would take more time to learn about other cultures and religions, and just learn to keep an open mind, rather than be ignorant and stereo-type people.
