A Brief History of Album Covers, 2017 - The Velvet Underground. “The Velvet Underground and Nico” [1966]. Andy Warhol may have produced the #velvetunderground ‘s debut album in name only, but his print artwork for the sleeve helped to secure the album’s place in music history. The bright yellow banana on a plain white background perfectly captures the late-60s Pop Art movement as #andywarhol saw it, using simple, recognizable popular culture imagery for mass production. Initial runs of the album had a “Peel slowly and see” instruction next to the banana. The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Rock [NEW 1978 Edition] - The Velvet Underground. The seminal NYC band, and, one of the most important influences in rock, though never accorded during their existence, the recognition their pioneering music warranted. #loureed an accountant’s son from Long Island, encountered #johncale a Welshman on a music scholarship to Eastman Conservatory, in 1964. Reed had been a songwriter for Pickwick Records and Cale had left schooling for something a bit more avant-garde and nothing much came of it. Lou Reed eventually recruited #sterlingmorrison and then, the Beatle-cropped #maureentucker .
