Steve Cram recounts his funniest Olympic moment.
Athlete Steve Cram was left pie eyed when Princess Anne turned slapstick queen. Anne marched up, a custard pie in each hand, and plastered them over his face. Cram, who could have done a runner, just stood there smiling. TV boss David Reay was laughing too - even though Anne’s antics cost him £2,000.
The royal comedy show brought the house down at a fundraising dinner for Britain’s Olympic athletes. Game for a Laugh TV host Jeremy Bradley was auctioneer as 400 guests in Newcastle upon Tyne bid for the privelege of throwing pies in the faces of celebrities
Bidding froze at £300 when it was Cram’s turn. Then Anne asked Tyne Tees TV chief David Reay, who had offered the £300: “How much will you pay if I throw the pie?” He immediately offered £1,000. But Jeremy Beadle surprised the princess by producing two pies. “That will cost you twice as much,” said Anne - and Mr Reay paid up.

Sebastian Coe and Steve Cram restage the historic Great Court Run at Trinity College, Cambridge in October 1988. HRH Prince Edward was starter for the race. On the first stroke of 12.00 noon, Coe and Cram had to run the 367 metres round the Great Court before the clock finished striking. They did it and raised over £40,000 for the appeal.
